During the last solar maximum, in 1988, a solar flare caused the entire electrical power grid of Quebec (the size of France) to stop functioning. Solar flares, such as the one this wekend, can cause our satellite system, and hence our communications systems to malfunction. These are not theoretical impacts, but once which have occured in the past. Hence, the situation is precisely the opposite of what you infer: it is irresponsible NOT to report. Recent scientific reports now indicate that 70% of global warming may be caused by solar activity, and only 30% by human activity (fossil fuel). Hence the reigning environmental thesis that human industry is causing global warming is INCORRECT. Hence it is important to correct misinformation propagated by well-meaning but uninformed members of the environmental community. The solar flare of this weekend may be an example of increased solar activity which is contributing to global warming. Other information indicates we may be in a larger solar activity cycle than the standard 11 year sunspot cycle.
