" Stopping the comming Ice Age" - A documentary video by-- The Insitute for a Future -- in Kensington Ca. "The Survial of Civilization" - A focus on three problems threatening (1982) our existence... Carbon Dioxide selected papers by : Investment Money John D. Hamaker Population Ice Ages- occur in cycles of about 100,000 years. 90,000 in deep freeze, and 10,000 in an interglacial warming period. We know this from the study of sediments and ice cores. We are currently living at the very end of an interglacial warm period. Thinking back to my childhood ( 40 yrs. ) I am aware that as I grow older the weather seems to get more interesting and unpredictable. There are new records being broken all the time. Several years ago there were two" floods of the century" in the Mississippi and tributary, states, only two years apart . Last season was the first or second most active hurricane season on record. The same types of phenomena were happening in Europe, and other places. It's the Greenhouse Effect. And according to Hamaker and others, this is the mechanism that produces global warming which in turn is the engine that drives the cycle of Ice Ages. The key actors in this drama are (no surprise to Gaia enthusiasts ) the forrests of the temperate zones. These trees are large, broad leaved, and many leaved. They deal with carbon dioxide on a truly planetary scale. But so do the trees down in the tropics. The difference is that glaciers don't reach the band of forrests around the Equator, and they are ( were ! ) constant. But the forrests in the higher latitudes hardly exist during the periods of glaciation. Why ? The interglacial warming period is about 10,000 yrs long. There is an explosion of Earths primary life form - plants - during this period. In a study titled " Interglacial Vegetational Succession and Lake Development in Denmark " its author Svend Andersohn examined progressively deeper layers of sediment in lakes in Denmark to determine the types of vegetation growing around them through 200,000 years of glacial and interglacial periods. Andersohn found that the large shade trees which need a great quantity of soil minerals to thrive began to die back about halfway through (5,000 yrs ) the last interglacial period. There was a simultanious increase of less vital plants, to fill the niche. These plants could live on more acidic ( less buffered by minerals ) soil. He found that the same process had occured during the interglacial period before the last. Much erosion takes place during a warm period by wind and especially water, causing the minerals in the soil to erode away, or leach deep into the subsoil out of the useful reach of the plants, causing them to weaken and die. As the Earth's temperate forests get progressively weaker they succumb to insects, disease, and especially forest fires ( sound familiar ? ) started by lightning. They stop consuming massive amounts of CO2. When they die they reintroduce the CO2 back into the atmosphere. When they burn, it happens quickly. As less CO2 is removed and more CO2 is reintroduced into it, the atmosphere begins to warm considerably. But what does that mean? Does the entire atmosphere warm at the same rate ? No. Since the tropics recieve more sunlight than the poles and upper latitudes, they get much warmer, while the poles remain quite frozen. Those of you familiar with this process recognize it as the weather engine of the planet. With this Greenhouse Effect it is much magnified. The warmer temperatures in the tropics cause more evaporation of sea water which is then carried even higher into the atmosphere at much faster speeds ( winds ) because of the icreased temperature differential at the equater and the poles. This is why at the end of a warming, there are larger, stronger, and more storms of all varieties suddenly occuring. We also get a displacement of normal weather patterns because the stronger winds are carying the moisture laden clouds farther into the upper latitudes. There are now more clouds diminishing the sunlight in the uppers causing those parts of the world to cool even more. This intensifies the process. The clouds release their moisture as snow or ice, and the caps and existing glaciers begin to grow. The last part of the cycle happens when well developed glaciers go on the move. They break off and pick up all varieties of rock, and grind them to dust. Rocks are soil food ( minerals ) for plants in chunk form. The rock dust (Loess ) is carried by water, and blown by winds over many parts of the Earth. This process remineralizes much of the earth's soil. It nourishes the remaining forests and other vegetation. As the forests become rejuvenated, they thrive and spread, and begin to consume the excess ( from our point of view ) CO2 in the atmosphere. As CO2 decreases, the Greenhouse Effect subsides ,and with it the transfer of excess moisture to the high latitudes and polar regions which build up the glaciers. The glaciers melt back and plant life begins to colonize the newly available remineralized, warming land. And another Interglacial Warming Period begins. This cycle has been going on since before the advent of Industrial Anthropoids. So where do we fit in ? By destroying forests and plant life ( logging and overpaving) at the rate that we are, we're killing the only real saviors of earth's current civilizations. Capitalism ( greed ) is the driving force behind the acceleration of this natural process. It's the motivation for clearcuting forests in the temperate zones, and now in the tropics as well. The lungs of the planet. Capitalism is forcing artificial pockets of overpopulation, and migrations of poor people who will utilize anything they can to stay warm and sheltered. It is the Capitalist oligarchies who have forced the rest of us to use carbon based fuels to drive our societies. There is no reason for this other than greed. The stable weather patterns that allowed for the growth of populations and civilizations due to the production of ample food supplies are gone. The transition period between the end of a warm period and the beginning of glacial growth is measured in tens, not thousands of years as one might think. Andersohn documented this in his study, and I recently heard this corroborated in a science documentary. So what can we do ? It seems hopeless to fight a planetary cycle. But we don't have to fight it to survive. We can slow down, and soften the effects of the transition by doing the following according to Hamaker. 1) Stop deforestation immediately. 2) Start reforestation immediately. But not with quick growing conifers with needles for leaves as the logging companies are doing, instead we need quick growing broad leafed trees and plants to take the CO2 out of the atmosphere as much and as quickly as possible. 3) Stop using fossil fuels. 4) Start remineralizing the forests like the glaciers do, with rock dust. Rock dust is easily manufactured, and can easily be distributed to where it counts. Rock dust is currently manufactured in Europe and the U.S. There have been numerous successful experiments with rock dust to revive the Black Forest in Europe. And in Australia, has revived large parcels of eroding marginal pasture lands. Rock dusted gardens produce amazing quantities of large robust fruits and vegetables that fight off insects without the need for chemicals. ( All this according to the video, and some people who I've talked to who swaer by it.) Even though I am not a scientist studying the problem, I have worked in agriculture enough for this to make sense to me. Use your own judgement.
