The George W. Bush who spoke at Bob Jones was the real George W. Bush. He is
a longtime member of the Religious Right, an avowedly born-again Christian
who was tasked by his father's Presidential campaign in 1992 as liaison with
Christian conservatives...an assignment he carried out with enthusiasm. Of
course he knew about the university's reactionary policies. Anyone who has
had even one eye open over the past thirty years knows about Bob Jones
University. The point is that he knew, *and he didn't care.* The clear
implication in his bluntly political decision to speak there is that George
W. Bush *approves* of the Bob Jones policies. That alone, IMNSHO, is
sufficient grounds to bar him from the Presidency.
(Please note that I'm not attacking conservative Christianity. My own
beliefs, as listmembers know, are strongly traditional Christian and
Bible-centered. It is the interpretation put on the Bible and the teaching
of Jesus Christ by Bob Jones University--an interpretation that deviates
sharply from historic Christian values--that I object to.)
