Yes, but where is there evidence to substantiate what Ed McCabe
asserted ? Why has no scientist or university or government
agency announced or published anything similar -- or have they ?
If so, where are these other accounts recorded, and why is the
sensationalist media ignoring such a sensational story ?

And what does "fairly recently" actually mean ? (re: 35% oxygen)

Also, how did they (who ever they were) measure the oxygen near
a freeway ? Did exhaust hydrocarbons contaminate their measuring
device, rendering their "results" (9% oxygen) totally invalid ?

I've read an account similar to this, and it all sounds plausible.
But conditions existing 80 million years ago are hardly relevant
  to today's atmospheric conditions.

When I was in high school in 1964, the textbooks (published
about 1955) said that the air was 21% oxygen. Now, 36 years
later, new textbooks say the air is 21% oxygen. There's been
no change at all -- or only a very small change -- unless you
give credence to various (apparently) unsubstantiated rumors.

I'd sure like to find some verifiable indication that the
Earth is running out of oxygen -- IF it is true.

Until then, I can only presume that this is environmentalist
doomsday theology, or intentional propaganda, or urban rumor,
or perhaps all of the above.

This could happen over millions of years, but I doubt oxygen
has been rapidly "bound up" over the past two centuries by
  industrial-age technologies.

Look at it this way: Combustion of fossil fuels, etc.,
produces carbon dioxide (CO2) by oxidizing carbon in a ratio
of one carbon atom per two oxygen atoms.

The atmosphere's CO2 level has grown by 28% in the last 150 years,
according to one source quoted in the media. However, 150 years
ago CO2 was only 0.028% of the atmosphere, and today it has grown
to 0.036% (given 28% growth), which is a difference of .008%.

[If someone has more accurate figures, please let me know.]

Now, with oxygen at 21%, look at the difference in magnitude.
CO2 grew 0.008%. With two oxygen atoms in each CO2 molecule,
perhaps the free oxygen level fell by 0.016%. That's hardly
enough to measure, and cannot justify rumors claiming
  drastically reduced atmospheric oxygen levels.

Of course, we could ask, is oxygen "disappearing" by another
route -- hundreds or thousands of times faster than it is
being bound up in CO2 ?

Hmm... any ideas about that ?

  Bill
