Censored Alerts are important news stories from alternative, i.e. REAL news, sources. These stories have been censored or under-covered in the U.S. corporate media. High-Caliber: US Promotes Weapons Bazaars Source: Mother Jones, July/August 1999 Author: Ken Silverstein U.S. Government supports two dozen International Arms Carnivals or Arms Shows around the world. Latin America Defentech or LAD '99 brought 200 firms from around the world to Rio de Janeiro in April, 1999, in hopes of drumming up business with Brazil, the region's biggest arms importer. Defentech is one of about two dozen stops on the international arms circuit, which includes exhibition sites on every continent outside Antarctica. Arms shows are largely a mixture of hype and machismo. For example, at the International Defense Exhibition in Abu Dhabi, live-fire range attendees sipped umbrella drinks while observing surgical strikes on dummy targets. This display gives industry personnel a chance to make the hard sell to potential clients. Presently, critics of the exhibitions, like Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) want support for a bill that bans Pentagon participation in weapons exhibitions. The work on the bill began when the Pentagon started leasing military equipment to companies for display at such shows and paid for military escorts to ensure the weapon's safety. As the weapons industry prepares to face the new millennium, its strategy for keeping production lines open includes selling arms to Third World countries that do not necessarily have the money or need for them. For example, Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso recently spent $59.7 million on high-speed torpedoes in a country that is severely poverty stricken. What was Aboard Flight 1862? Sources Earth Island Journal, Winter, 2000 Author: Gar Smith Seven years after El Al Flight 1862 crashed just outside Amsterdam, authorities have just recently discovered what was aboard the plane. Originally, Israeli officials claimed that Flight 1862 was carrying only "a regular commercial load," consisting of perfume and gift articles. Since the crash, 850 survivors, police and rescue workers have sought medical treatment for a host of maladies. The denials collapsed on October 4, 1998, when the Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad printed a leaked copy of a page from the plane's cargo manifest. According to the previously secret freight documents, Flight 1862 was hauling 10 tons of chemicals, including hydrofluoric acid, isopro-panol, and dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). These chemicals make up three of the four chemicals used in the production of sarin nerve gas. The DMMP had been supplied by Solkatronic Chemicals of Morrisville, Pennsylvania. The shipment was destined for the Israeli Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) in New Ziona, outside of Tel Aviv. While the export of DMMP is strictly controlled by the U.S. government, the U.S. Department of Commerce had no problem granting Solkatronic's license to ship DMMP. Still, Israel maintains that the chemicals were to be used to test gas masks but this explanation is puzzling since it only takes a few grams to conduct such tests. These findings have raised serious questions about the transportation of undeclared hazardous materials. *---------------------------------------------------------------* * Project Censored Online http://www.sonoma.edu/projectcensored * * Come and join our listserv for Censored Story updates * *---------------------------------------------------------------* www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
