I'm a native Nutmegger, and live in the New Haven metro area...so I
have a
singularly local perspective.
The New Haven police were notoriously corrupt in those days (probably
still
are, but let's not go there)...a few years after the Panther trial, in
the
wake of Watergate, it was revealed that the New Haven police had been
conducting it's own COINTELPRO program, replete with informers,
infiltrators,
and a wiretap of almost everyone in the state...it became sort of a
badge of
honor, to find one's name on the list of people whom the New Haven
police
had decided were worthy of being spied upon...
And we're not talking just leftist activists on this list...we're
talking
the mayor (actually almost all the mayors of the major cities in the
state),
city councilmen, state legislators, local business bigwigs...
And yes, it was revealed that the police put a lot of effort into
infiltrating moles into various groups (some pretty innocuous groups
at
that, not just the obvious ones), moles who immediately agitated for
violence...
