Did Stephen King Invent Janet Reno?

by Jim Peron

The case of Elian Gonzales is one which disturbs a great many people. Without
fail, extremists of the Left such as Maxine Waters and Jesse Jackson, Jr.
have all demanded that Elian be deported. How dare that six-year-old boy
symbolize the desire to escape the Marxist utopia of Fidel Castro?

Leading the charge to return Elian to a slave state is Attorney General Janet
Reno. Unlike Waters and Jackson it doesn't appear that Ms. Reno is
automatically motivated by a pro-Marxist bias. But no doubt there are other
motivations. Perhaps personal, perhaps psychological. Now, of course, it is
terribly politically incorrect to state what so many people think. But I
can't help but wonder if Ms. Reno's apparent lack of any feminine qualities
could partially be behind her antichild vendetta. Of course the mere fact
that Ms. Reno is the butchest Attorney General in a very long time is not
enough for one to draw conclusions. After all I've known many butch women who
enjoy children including many open lesbians.

The rhetoric of the Left is, as usual, blatantly false. In the case of Elian
they have just discovered that they are profamily. In the past they
frequently have talked about how underaged children should have the right to
an abortion without parental permission. But suddenly they discover parental
"rights" when it comes to Elian. A 12-year-old girl can abort, and the
parents have no say, but a six-year-old boy can't escape a dictatorship. In
the books of the Left, fathers almost never had rights. Now Elian's father
suddenly automatically has a right to the child.

They speak of "returning Elian" to his father. This is stated as if the boy
was taken from his father. They ignore the fact that Elian's father did not
have custody of the boy while Elian lived in Cuba. Ellian lived with his
mother and step-father. He had not lived with his father for the last three
years. And when a boy is only six years old, three years is tantamount to a
lifetime. If we look at how six-year-old children remember life, then
mentally Elian has lived with his family in Miami much longer than he lived
with his biological father in Cuba. It is doubtful that he has any real
memories of living with his biological father at all.

Wink, Wink, Nudge, Nudge

Reno has seen to it that Elian's father was given a visa to come to the
United Statessomething virtually impossible for Cubans to get. The same
thing happened when the boy's grandmothers visited a few weeks earlier. She,
of course, ignores the fact that Castro will only let family members leave
provided other family members are left behind. He is not yet willing to
abandon all his hostages. And once the father arrived in the United States,
Reno made sure she publicly announced, for his benefit, that once her armed
agents apprehend the boy and give him to the father that there is nothing
forcing them to stay in the United States. She wanted him to know that he
didn't need to wait until the matter had played itself out in the courts.
Like a character from Monty Python, you can see her saying this with a wink,
wink, nudge, nudge.

Now the radical Left frequently condemns child labor regardless of the stage
of economic development in the country where it is taking place. They have
made their position quite clear: child labor is wrong under all
circumstances. Well, almost under all circumstances. The Left and Reno are
quite happy to send Elian back to a country with government-enforced child
labor. Recently on Larry King both Gloria Estefan and the daughter of Fidel
Castro (who wants Elian to stay in the United States) said that children in
Cuba are taken from their parents and put into communist labor camps.

CNN's proCastro reporter Lucia Newman quickly called from Havana to correct
the two women. She said they were wrong in saying that 11-year-old children
are forced to work the fields for four months. But she acknowledged that
children are forced to labor for the state in various occupations for one
month. But she added that the parents can visit their children on the
weekends. What utter hypocrisy! A child who willingly stitches soccer balls
for a salary, however low, is a victim. But forced child labor without pay to
prop up a dictator is somehow morally acceptable. Radicals like Waters and
Jackson, Jr., simply pretended they didn't hear about forced child labor. Of
course they both want higher minimum wages because workers are being
exploited, but when a child is forced to labor for no wage they turn a deaf
ear.

Salvation by Fire

Reno has a history of taking the "best interests" of the child into account.
Unfortunately her methods have always been destructive to the children she is
intent on saving. Perhaps she is simply foolish. But if she denies being
stupid on the matter then the only real alternative explanation is that she
is intentionally malevolent. Reno sent in armed tanks and trained soldiers
with automatic weapons to "save" the children at the Branch Davidian compound
in Waco. Her excuse for this violence was that she wanted to help the
children inside. First, she claimed they were being beaten by Koresh but he
was in such bad shape, having been shot by the child savers outside, that
this couldn't be true. Then she told everyone she did it because she was
concerned about the "lasting effect" the siege would have on the children.
After her agents were finished the children were no longer experiencing any
traumathey were all dead.

The evidence is pretty strong that Reno's men opened fire on the building.
Koresh called 911 and begged them to stop shooting at the building because
there were women and children inside. Reno's agents stopped only seconds
before they would have run out of ammunition anyway. When parents did leave
the building with their children, they were arrested and their children put
into state custodyhardly an incentive for the other parents inside to do the
same. All of this supposedly to arrest one man. Relatives of the people
trapped inside the compound begged Reno to allow them to contact their family
members. They telephoned her office and sent written requests by fax. They
were ignored. Reno later said she was never contacted by them.

Reno's tanks knocked down portions of the building preventing most of the
occupants from escaping the fire that broke out. In all, 27 children died as
a result of Reno's orders. Several suffocated as they were buried alive as a
result of the damage done by the tanks. At least two children were killed
outright as the rubble struck them. Those not killed immediately died in the
inferno that followed. One forensic scientist wrote: "There was a particular
instance where all that remained was the arm and hand of a mother clasping a
small child's hand and remains of arm. You could see how tightly the child's
hand was being squeezed by the mother."

Brainwashing in Dade County

Before assuming the office of Attorney General, Janet Reno was District
Attorney in Miami's Dade County. During her tenure in office she launched a
case to help children she alleged were victims of sexual abuse. She brought
in so-called "experts" who tend to use typical brainwashing techniques to
convince children they are victims of abuse. In such cases the children
typically invent fanciful tales of abuse and in this case the same scenario
played itself out.

Reno's victim, however, wasn't some adult pedophile but a young boy who Reno
insisted, be tried as an adult. Bobby Fijnje moved to Miami with his family
in 1981. His father had been a diplomat for the Dutch government in the
Antilles. The family had decided to make the United States their new home.
They joined a local church where Bobby helped work in the Sunday School.

On August 28, 1989 the police arrived at the Fijnje home. They were given
permission to search the house for evidence against young Bobby. They ripped
his room apart looking for pornography but found nothing incriminating. The
police took the boy into custody and put him through a long, drawn-out
interrogation. For the first two hours the boy's father was allowed to be
present but he was then told to leave the room so the police could talk to
Bobby alone.

The newsletter Casualties of Sexual Allegations (January 1997) says that
young Bobby was an insulin-dependent diabetic who "became ill and unsteady
during 7 hours of questioning during which he had almost no food. Promised he
could leave if he confessed, he made a sort of confession, but when
immediately taken into custody, he reasserted his innocence."

That evening the boy was put into state custody at the Juvenile Detention
Center where he was forced to remain for almost two years while Janet Reno
engaged in another one of her crusades to help children. Bobby's father
explains what happened:

"During Bobby's imprisonment, we twice asked for him to be released on bond,
the second time in the care of his aunt and uncle (a retired Connecticut
State Supreme Court judge), but this was refused because 'Bobby was a threat
to the community' and because it was said that our family would flee the
country. Bobby pleaded not guilty, and was tried as an adult on the motion of
the Dade County prosecutor's office, headed by Ms. Reno.

"The pre-trial hearings finally began in early August 1990 with Judge Norman
Gerstein presiding. Pre-trial hearings lasted until the middle of January
1991, at which time a jury was selected. Before and during the trial, we were
repeatedly urged to accept a plea-bargain and warned of the dangers Bobby
faced in prison. We were told that he would have AIDS within a week after
entering prison. We were told what a horrible time he would have in prison,
where the jailers are mere administrators and the prison is actually ruled by
the prisoners. But we knew Bobby was innocent, and we refused to accept a
plea bargain.

"During the trial, not a single witness ever testified that he or she had
seen anything improper. Over 800 members of the church stepped forward and
offered to testify on Bobby's behalf. At least 14 motions for mis-trial were
filed by Bobby's lawyers, Mr. Mel Black and Mr. Peter Miller. Over 500
sidebar conferences were held in this case, which cost the taxpayers well
over $3 million, money that could have been used to feed the poor, improve
public health, or shelter the many homeless people who roam the streets of
Miami. Instead, this money was spent on the longest trial ever held in Dade
County, all in an effort to send an innocent boy to jail for life.
"On the morning of 4 May 1991, the jury advised Judge Gerstein that a verdict
had been reached, but we waited an hour and a half for that verdict to be
read. Judge Gerstein advised our lawyer that we must wait for Ms. Reno's
arrival. She wanted to be present when the verdict was read.
"Bobby was acquitted on all counts.

"During this period, our family had to endure daily attacks and lies in the
newspapers and on television. My wife and I were accused of being drug
dealers and ringleaders in a child pornography business. Death threats were
sent to us and left on our telephone answering machine. In addition to local
and county police departments, the FBI was also called in to investigate us.
Unmarked police cars cruised through our street, while a police helicopter
with a searchlight flew overhead at night. Television reporters knocked on
every door and window in the house, but we refused to give interviews because
we believed that the media would not truthfully report them.

"Ms. Janet Reno was the Dade County Prosecutor at the time of the
investigation and prosecution of our son, and as such she must bear the
primary responsibility for what was done to him. Is Ms. Reno the right person
to head the United States Justice Department? Is she really a crusader
against child abuse? Is she aware the she abused my son by her actions and
robbed him of one year, eight months, and one week of his life?"

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal psychologist David Raskin
said that Reno's treatment of this child was the "most inhumane and
despicable" case he had seen in over twenty years of practice.

Reno Is Here to Help You

Typical of accusations obtained through brain washing, the alleged victims of
Bobby Fijnje said that the boy dug up graves. They reported that one woman
turned herself into a witch and that Bobby used to dance naked on the roof of
the church in full public viewwhich, of course, no one else noticed. On top
of this the boy was accused of eating a new born infant.

When the case was finally over, the Fijnje family decided to leave the United
States. Their attorney told them that Janet Reno was not finished with them
yet and was looking into further charges against the tormented child. Though
they wished to remain in America, the family left fearing that Reno hadn't
finished with her child-saving crusades. And they were right. Since then she
moved on to Waco and now her attention is focused on young Elian. For years
people have laughed at the punch line, "I'm from the government and I'm here
to help you." When it comes to Janet Reno these words loose their humor and
become frightening instead.

Half the time I think that Janet Reno doesn't exist, and couldn't exist,
except, perhaps, in the pages of a Stephen King novel.
