Yes, it is "weird and bizarre"...and could we also say "contrived"?
For the last 2 weeks the national "news media"
has been totally focused on this one story of
6 year old Elian Gonzales. It's been on the
covers of Time and Newsweek. The TV networks
are devoting half of their evening news to this
one story....as though nothing else of importance is
happening anywhere in the world.
Four years ago on this date, the national "news media"
was totally focused on another child.....a 7 year old girl.
It made the cover of Time and Newsweek.

PESCADERO, California (CNN) -- Accompanied by a throng of media
photographers, friends and relatives of 7-year-old Jessica Dubroff gathered
to say goodbye to the little girl who dreamed of flying a small plane across
the country.
Dubroff's dream ended Thursday when her Cessna Cardinal 177 crashed shortly
after take-off from Cheyenne, Wyoming. Jessica, her father and flight
instructor were killed in the crash.
Other "news stories" the national media have been totally focused on
include:
The murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey.
The O.J. Simpson murder trial.
The death of Princess Diane.
The Lorena Bobbit husband castration episode.
The Tonya Harding vs Nancy Kerrigan ice skating feud.
The William Kennedy Smith rape trial.
The Anita Hill charges against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.
The murder of homosexual Matthew Shepherd.
And of course the endless news stories about Clinton and Monica Lewinski,
including the congressional hearings and the impeachment trial.
Americans love Soap Opera melodrama.
The "news media" is only too happy to keep "totally focused"
on whatever it can find and pump up to hold the public's attention.
And while America is "totally focused" on little Elian or big Monica,
the real news....the events of real importance to the life of
this nation and the world, go totally unreported.
We are a nation of sleepwalkers.
