<< Can an immoral person be regarded as a true patriot? The framers of this
republic didn’t think so. The Father of the American Revolution Sam Adams,
said, "He who is void of virtuous attachments in private life is, or very
soon will be, void of all regard for his country. There is seldom an
instance of a man guilty of betraying his country, who had not before lost
the feeling of moral obligations in his private connections…."
Our form of government is totally dependent upon "each and every one of us
to control ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God," James
Madison said. John Adams agreed. He said, "Our Constitution was made only
for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government
of any other." >>
I wish you guys would do some genealogy. In the course of your research you
would read a lot of old papers and family records. All the wonderful
"morality" you always refer to was just about as thick on the ground then as
it is now. Things were going on that boggle the mind. Just when did you all
decide that people have really changed? It's certainly not the picture that
comes up when you really study the people and the places that are "real."
The front pages of the early newspapers have widened my eyes on many
occasions, and when you finally get the skinny on some of those old family
situations (birth dates and marriage dates in particular), you get the
impression that all was not so fabulously moral as all that. The Mayflower
families in particular led some very interesting lives. In many of the old
records of my mother's English family, reference is made to daughters who
became pregnant by employers. The girls were disowned, sent off to their
fate and never heard of again.
That was, of course, in merrie olde England. I imagine the same thing was
going on here. Must have been some kinds of virgin births.. Obviously none
of those moral men had anything to do with this kind of thing. Prudy
