Another morsel on the Elian case
Boozers.
You probably thought there was nothing you hadn't heard about the Elian
Gonzalez case. That's the way I felt until I received a message from Angel
(pronounced AHN-hell) Hernandez, one of our sports copy editors.
Because he surfs the news and sports wires constantly as part of his job,
Angel is probably one of our best-informed staffers. He never misses an
opportunity to share some of this information with me, particularly if it
concerns Cuba, the birthplace of his parents.
Naturally, Angel has been soaking up every bit of available information about
little Elian and others who have been drawn into his tragic story. If an
electronic search of our data base is indicated, Angel wades right in.
When it was learned that Elian's Miami family is being represented by
attorney Kendall Coffey, the name obviously rang Angel's bell. Sure enough,
Coffey had been southern Florida's top federal prosecutor in 1996.
The Miami Herald reported Coffey announced his resignation May 17 of that
year, after the Justice Department's Inspector General's Office revealed it
was investigating a report he had allegedly bit a strip tease dancer at a
topless dance club.
In deciding to step down, Coffey told reporters, it was "the most painful and
difficult choice of my life ... But leave I must, because my family has
already paid too great a price for the sacrifices that accompany public
service."
The Herald said Coffey was upset about losing a big drug case in February and
sought solace at the Lipstik Adult Entertainment Club in Miami. He ordered a
$900 bottle of champagne and retired to a private booth with a blonde dancer
for what the club called a "table dance." It was there Coffey allegedly
struggled with the dancer and bit her on the arm.
White House spokesman Mike McCurry said President Clinton, who is known to
have done a little nibbling himself, had read a copy of the letter and
"believes he took the appropriate step under those circumstances."
Fast forward now to 2000. Elian's great uncles, Lazaro and Delfin, are trying
to gain custody of him. Hardly the paragons of virtue, both have been
convicted twice of drunken driving. Two of Elian's Miami cousins have been
arrested in felony investigations.
Could it be that because the uncles are clearly boozers that they are birds
of Coffey's feather even though their choice of beverage was substantially
less expensive than his Dom Perignon bubbly?
In Lazaro's and Delfin's defense, we should note that neither of these
paragons of virtue has ever bitten a blonde stripper.
Opinion polls continue to indicate a majority of Americans would rather see
Elian returned to his father than raised by a couple of Miami drunks and
Marisleysis Gonzalez, who has been repeatedly hospitalized for stress since
she was 17.
Even so, congressional Republicans will investigate how the lad was returned
to his father. It will give them yet another opportunity to beat up on Janet
Reno and secure Florida's electoral votes in the November election.
