Never sell the Brits short when it comes to a fight. They're world class
fighters. You definitely don't want them for neighbors, but you could do
a whole hell of a lot worse when it comes to war allies. They're tough,
they're smart and they're ruthless. They get the job done.
When they were preparing the counter-attack against Rommel's Afrika Korps
they employed a number of extremely clever deceptions. My fave is the
railroad. They built a one third scale model railroad out in the desert.
The desert is pretty devoid of size reference marks so from a distance it
looked full scale. It looked for all the world like the Brits were
building up for an offensive far south of where they actually planned to
attack.
Every day Rommel would send a couple of Storks aloft to see what the Brits
were up to. Brit forward ground spotters would spot the Storks and radio
in an alert. Brit HQ would scramble a couple of Spits to chase them away.
But the Spits waited long enough to give the Storks a chance to pop up
over the horizon and catch a glimpse of the railroad. Then the Spits would
chase 'em before they got close enough to realize it was only a big model.
Rommel became convinced that the Brit counter-offencive would be a great
distance from where it actually happened. The rest is history.
Keep this in mind the next time you think you've figured out what the
Brits are up to.
