The Bush family owns Zapata Oil...actually, I believe the Zapata conglomerate is into
many different fields, but the 2 biggies are
oil and shipping.
Zapata owned most of the Kuwaiti oil fields prior to the 1970s, when the fields
started to be taken over by the Kuwaiti government.
Zapata saw the writing on the wall, and cut a deal with the Kuwaitis to remain in
management and 'consulting' positions. But the
biggest money-making deal they got out of their cozy relationship with the Kuwaitis
was that Zapata was granted a monopoly for
shipping the oil OUT of Kuwait; in other words, only ships owned by Zapata were
allowed into Kuwaiti ports to receive the oil for
shipment around the world...
I had read about the Bush/Zapata almost-monopoly of the Kuwaiti oil fields in various
sources over the years, but the bit about them
becoming the managers of the fields after the Kuwaitis took over the fields, and the
Zapata monopoly on the shipping of the oil, I
discovered in an old 1976 National Geographic that someone had left at a place I was
working at a few years ago...
I grabbed the mag to take home to read later, because it had an article in it
regarding little-known heroes and heroines of the
American Revolution (remember, it was published in the bicentennial year)...but once I
started looking through the magazine, I
discovered another article on the Middle East...
It was interesting to read this 20+ year old article with the benefit of hindsight
(which is always 20-20)...and the section of the
article on Kuwait contained the information regarding the deal with Zapata.
It was interesting to read the writer's perception of Kuwait in 1976 -- at that point
it was just starting to transform from a poor
country where most people were living in tents, to the country we know now. The
writer was impressed with how the Kuwaiti royal
family was building free housing, providing free education, everyone was starting to
drive expensive cars, etc.
