Broder: 'Clinton Shamed the Country'

It was a rare moment of candor for the Washington press corps.
There was its dean, The Washington Post's David Border, debating
the Clinton legacy on Sunday's "Meet the Press."

When moderator Tim Russert wondered aloud whether Americans felt
nostalgic or fatigued by the soon to be departed Clinton crew,
Broder minced no words:

"The one thing I know, Tim, is that the American people want an
iron-clad guarantee that the next president will not embarrass
them in front of their children the way that Bill Clinton did.

"I don't know how that fits into nostalgia or fatigue, but it is
what is distinctly different about this election. The incumbent
president shamed the country. And it will not put up with that
again."

Too bad it took Clinton's impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky
case to prompt such a revelation from the old Postie. Especially
since Broder learned the truth about the president nearly a
decade ago, as his former Post colleague, reporter Michael
Isikoff, explained in his book Uncovering Clinton.

Broder, it turns out, had actually invited the then-Arkansas
governor to Washington's Gridiron dinner in the spring of 1991.
It was to be Clinton's DC debuts of sorts. The Post writer made
sure Clinton had a prime seat, right between Post publisher
Katherine Graham and columnist Meg Greenfield.

But it was Broder's other guests who captured Clinton's eye; two
young female reporters who also worked at the Post. The future
president repeatedly invited one of them, Laura Stepp, to "come
see me" in Arkansas. At the evening's end the governor looked
deep into Stepp's eyes while he grasped her hand for an
uncomfortably long handshake.

Stepp later told Broder, "I just thought he was coming on to me.
I've shaken enough politicians' hands to know this was a little
unusual."

Broder told Isikoff the incident left a bad taste in his mouth.
"I was sort of pissed. It was clear that whatever happened, it
was something that made her uncomfortable -- and he was my
guest."

But as ticked as the old Postie was, he kept the lid on his
preview of the real Bill Clinton till a year ago.

Meanwhile folks like Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones and all the
other targets of Clinton's libido -- not to mention honest
whistleblowers like the Arkansas state troopers who tried to get
the truth out in 1993 -- were trashed and bashed by Broder's
mainstream media brethren.
