Hillary's Anti-Cop Rhetoric Blamed for Spitting Attack on Police

"Part of Hillary's delegation now is the 'No Justice, No Peace'
section from Al Sharpton that despises cops and hates the
American flag."

That was the reaction of Guardian Angels founder and Rudy
Giuliani booster Curtis Sliwa to news that delegates gathered
this week in Albany to nominate Hillary Clinton for U.S. Senate
kicked off their festivities by spitting on a police honor guard
carrying the Stars and Stripes.

Sliwa made the comment on his WABC radio show Friday morning.
But even his radio partner and political opposite, defense
attorney Ron Kuby - a self-avowed Communist and enthusiastic cop
basher himself - found the story so outrageous that he couldn't
believe the episode had occurred as reported.

"As a lawyer, I hear this and say it sounds like something must
have happened before the alleged phlegm started flying," said the
bewildered police critic. "There must have been something that
triggered this."

The ugly incident was first reported Thursday by Albany Times
Union police reporter Brendan Lyons, who revealed that five
American-flag-carrying cops in full dress uniform had been spit
on and heckled as "Nazis" and "Giuliani's Third Reich" by
delegates about to cast their votes for the first lady.

Before the New York mayor dropped out of the Senate race Friday,
Mrs. Clinton's most effective campaign tactic had been whipping
up anti-police sentiment in the city's minority communities. Her
efforts hit paydirt after the March 16 shooting by New York
police of Patrick Dorismond, an unarmed African American security
guard.

After ten days of sustained rhetoric targeting what she and her
supporters said was an out of control NYPD, Mrs. Clinton's poll
numbers went up ten points, vaunting her into a three-point lead
over Giuliani.

Two months before, with four New York City police officers under
indictment in the shooting death of another unarmed black man,
West African immigrant Amadou Diallo, the first lady addressed
Rev. Sharpton's National Action Network. Though the cops had yet
to go on trial, Hillary had them already convicted, calling
Diallo's death a "murder."

Much to Sharpton's delight, Mrs. Clinton hinted she'd get the
Justice Department to look into the case. Weeks later all four
officers were acquitted of all charges by a mixed-race jury.

Sliwa isn't the only one to make the connection between Hillary's
cop bashing and Tuesday's honor guard spitting incident.

On Friday the New York Post (the only New York paper to cover the
incident) editorialized:

"What makes this episode particularly disturbing is that it took
place on the floor of the arena - where access was limited to
delegates carrying official passes! Sadly, that hardly surprises
- given some of the anti-cop rhetoric with which some Democratic
Party elements have aligned themselves in recent months."

The Post called on state Democratic chairwoman Judith Hope to
issue an official apology to the insulted Albany honor guard.
"Anything less would send a disquieting message that the party of
Hillary Clinton tolerates such behavior."

But in the two days since the nasty development came to light,
neither Hope nor Clinton has expressed any regrets.

Despite the dearth of media attention to the pro-Hillary
spit-fest, outrage is growing in other quarters. On the Web site
Free Republic, the incident prompted one poster to begin a
campaign soliciting donations for Albany police officers slain in
the line of duty.

Worse still for Hillary, the story may not be over. Though Albany
Police Chief John Neilsen told reporter Lyons the spitting
hecklers were "probably a very small minority in a sea of
legitimate Democratic Party members," there's talk the incident
involved many more high-ranking Democrats than first indicated.

After the spitting was reported, Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings
said, "I'd love to identify these indivduals."

Detective Thomas McGraw, the Albany Police Union chief who
described honor guard members Thursday as "very upset" over the
attack, was unavailable late Saturday to comment on rumors that
the spitting by Hillary delegates was widespread.
