NAACP Official Who Endorsed A Republican Is Suspended
(CNSNews.com) - The NAACP has suspended its Suffolk, Virginia branch
president for engaging in partisan political activity, but the suspended
official says it's really because he endorsed a Republican candidate.
On March 24, Paul Gillis urged other members of the Suffolk branch to
support Republican George Allen in Virginia's US Senate race. Gillis
told the group he was speaking as an individual, not as an NAACP
officer. But in a letter to Gillis, NAACP president Kweisi Mfume
accused Gillis of risking the NAACP's tax-exempt status by engaging in
partisan political activity. Gillis said he's being singled out for
supporting a Republican. He says he did the same thing in 1997 -
supporting Republican Mark Early for Virginia attorney general. At that
time, says Gillis, the NAACP general counsel said his endorsement of
Early was okay.
