As with any news pertaining to the "gun problem," the administration paraded out a bureaucrat to call for additional gun regulations. "Despite our success, we must not become complacent," said Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder. "There are still 89 Americans, including 12 young people, dying every day from gunshot wounds." Mr. Holder did not happen to mention that, while gun deaths are down, gun ownership is at an all-time high! "States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes," says Yale University's John Lott. "Just as higher arrest and conviction rates deter crime, so does the risk that someone committing a crime will confront someone able to defend him or herself." The Federalist reviewed the latest Centers for Disease Control mortality statistics -- the official statistics used by Clinton and company -- and found a few additional facts worth mentioning. Regarding the accidental deaths of children from birth to age 14, the CDC lists: auto (2,608), drowning (1010), pedestrian (675), bicycle (201), and gun accidents (142). "It turns out that among all the causes of accidental deaths of children, the chances of death by a gun accident are the remotest," notes Walter Williams. Gun homicides in the same age group totaled 346. As for Holder's claim of "12 young people, dying every day," he is including the 17-19-year-old gangsters and drug dealers -- who target primarily each other -- among the "young." For all ages, of a population of 270,000,000, there were 13,522 homicides involving the use of a gun. Tragically, while blacks compose 12.8% of the population, they account for more than 50% of all homicides -- mostly black males killed by black males. Interestingly, the CDC includes gun deaths by "legal intervention" or self-defense among the total cited above. We inquired about the actual number of legal shootings in order to distinguish between those and illegal homicides, and the CDC declined to release that figure. Memo to Reno, Holder et al.: While murders by perpetrators with guns have declined, the CDC's statistics also show that far more high school teenagers are having sex and taking illegal drugs than in 1992. Open Query... "Why does [Village celeb Rosie] O'Donnell give others advice that she doesn't find applicable to herself? ... O'Donnell may be able to afford bodyguards and pride herself that she does not 'personally own a gun.' Yet many other people have just as great a need for protection. Guns are the poor man's bodyguard." --Researcher, John Lott The BIG lie... The Vice Prevaricator has learned the fine art of compound fibbing from a master. For the record, after being challenged March 14 by George W. "to accept my proposal that we both reject the use of soft money to run issue ads," Gore said, "I will take the first step by requesting the Democratic National Committee not run any issue ads paid for by soft money unless and until the Republican Party uses [soft] money for advertising." Later that day, Gore said, "I have just asked the Democratic National Committee not to use any of this soft money until and unless the Republican Party definitely rejects the offer and goes first. And I hope they will hold back and do the right thing because then we can change democracy for the better forever." The following morning, he told ABC's Charlie Gibson, "Last night, I asked the Democratic committee to set aside any soft money and don't spend it on any issue ads unless and until the Republican Party does." Despite his vow, Gore fired the first "soft money" volley last week and Republicans are returning fire this week. News from the Swamp... In the House of Commons, the 84-year-old federal tax on estates is one step closer to its own grave. The GOP bill passed by a vote of 279-136. "No American should be forced to visit the IRS and the undertaker at the same time," said Rep. George Radanovich. (Of course, often visits from the former lead to visits with the latter!) Explaining why many House Democrats broke ranks with Party leadership, Demo Rep. Bill Jefferson said, "It's an anti-wealth-building tax in a time when African-Americans and Hispanics are trying to build wealth." But all is not as it seems.... As the bill reads now, on sunset, the "death tax" is replaced by a capital gains tax. Responding to massive fraud in the Education Department, including a $1 million employee theft ring, the House passed legislation (380-19 -- only Demos declining) requiring the agency to be audited by the General Accounting Office. Rep. Pete Hoekstra said that in the past year the agency had sent duplicate checks to contractors and grantees totaling almost $150 million. Rep. Ron Paul's legislation to restrict the central government from implementing a national ID for medical care also passed the House. "As an OB/GYN with more than 30 years experience in private practice, I know better than most the importance of preserving the sanctity of the physician-patient relationship," said Rep. Paul. "What happens to that trust when patients know any and all information given to their doctor will be placed in a data base accessible by anyone who knows the patient's 'unique personal identifier'?" In the halls of injustice on the left... The difference in baseball and football.... Mr. John Rocker made some stupid ethnic remarks and was suspended from baseball and required to attend sensitivity [AKA "re-education"] training. Football star Ray Lewis admitted to obstruction of justice after trying to cover up for a few friends who killed a couple of people, got a year probation from the court and is in line for a raise from the NFL. The Commissars... >From the "Bolshoi Bureaucracy" Files, there are 134,723 pages in the Code of Federal Regulations. That number has doubled since Al Gore was first elected to Congress. Government has sure been "reinvented"! Regarding your IRS overpayment... A proclamation: "Gay and lesbian Americans have made important and lasting contributions to our Nation in every field of endeavor. ... Today, more openly gay and lesbian individuals serve in senior posts throughout the Federal Government than during any other Administration. To build on our progress, in 1998 I issued an Executive Order to prohibit discrimination in the Federal civilian workforce based on sexual orientation, and my Administration continues to fight for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would outlaw discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation. ... With each passing year the American people become more receptive to diversity.... Now, therefore, I, William J. Clinton, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2000 as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. In witness whereof...in the year of our Lord two thousand and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-fourth. William J. Clinton" "The year of our Lord"...? Every federal agency was required to distribute this proclamation to each employee, and each agency hosted "special events" to celebrate the occasion. For example, the CIA, which used to refuse employment to homosexuals, held a gay pride celebration at its Langley, Va., headquarters featuring that homosexual protagonist, Demo Barney Frank. After meeting privately with the Director of Central Intelligence, George J. Tenet, Frank addressed a gaggle of CIA homosexuals, saying, "Your budget by now is about as big a secret as my sexuality. ... The fact that I would be speaking at Gay and Lesbian Pride Month at the CIA -- yeah, that's a sign of real progress." Speaking of how your money is being spent for you, Americans for Tax Reform declared that today is 'Cost of Government Day' -- that day when Americans, on average, have earned enough in gross income to pay his or her share of federal, state and local government taxes, fees etc. The total cost of government in 2000 is estimated at $3.86 trillion -- $14,400 for per capita. That is up from $3.72 trillion in 1999. >From the states... Iowa's Gov. Tom Vilsack, a Democrat, "has undercut the constitution," says the state's Senate Majority Leader, Stewart Iverson, by issuing a homosexual civil-rights executive order directing state agencies not to discriminate on the basis of "sexual orientation or gender identity." "The constitution is the fundamental law of the land in Iowa," says Mr. Iverson, "and now the governor has begun to legislate laws by executive order." (Hey, if Clinton can get away with it, why not the Governor of Iowa!) The "Dumb and Dumber" Department... >From the "Bureaucrati Ignoramus" Files, Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, who fancies himself a contender for the Vice Prevaricator's Vice Prevaricator slot in the upcoming presidential election, told a congressional committee at last year's hearing on the Wen Ho Lee security scandal at Los Alamos: "I, me, I will run the department, not the fiefdoms that existed in the past. ... I would just ask you to let me run my department. Give me a year to see if I've performed. Call me up again, and I will appear again to see whether I have initiated the reforms that I said I had." In the wake of this week's spy scandal (missing computer hard drives containing nuclear secrets from the "X Division"), Richardson was too busy addressing the National Press Club to show up and answer the Senate's questions about the "reforms" he initiated. "I seriously wonder if we don't have better security at our Wal-Mart stores than you do at the Los Alamos labs," Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell said to the DOE lapdog who did show for the hearings. "The Congress and the American people have a right to ask what the devil this administration is doing to us." "What the devil" pretty much sums it up! Memo to Mr. Richardson: Don't worry, be happy. Most of the classified info lost in the most recent snafu went out the back door to the Chinese Reds last year. In economic news... "I happen to think that the difficulties in reining in entitlement programs, once you have them, is far more difficult than the problems on the tax side. And that's the reason why I opt, clearly, as my second choice, for employing surpluses which cannot be used to reduce the debt to reduce taxes." --Mr. Alan Greenspan Around the world... South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il pledged to "join hands in efforts to resolve the issue of national unification" by signing a historic agreement in the Reds' capitol of Pyongyang. The north has collapsed under the weight of its bloated central bureaucracy. Conservative nations routed liberal and radical feminists at the finale of a U.N. special session on women's rights over the weekend, forcing Western powers to drop homosexual rights, sex rights for children and promotion of abortion from a new five-year U.N. agenda for women's advancement. "It was a rout, it was an utter defeat for the other side," said Austin Ruse, president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute in New York, who helped coordinate conservative opposition to sexual rights provisions for homosexuals and children, and increased pro-abortion mandates. And last, we received this White House press office release: "President Clinton Declares a Major Disaster Exists in the State of Tennessee." A follow-up statement released by the Office of the Vice President reads: "Today I am pleased that the Administration declared my home state of Tennessee a major disaster area...." "Pleased"? Gore was referring to the recent flooding that has ravaged Tennessee (undoubtedly from "global warming"), but the real disaster in Gore's "home state" is that he is trailing George W. in the polls, and in the wake of his landlord/tenant "problem" no amount of federal disaster funding will close the margin. His words -- cocky and disconcerting -- became the butt of jokes. The last laugh could be Al Gore's. ... At the time everyone thought this was Mr. Gore's interpretation of the relevant statutes. It now seems he was talking about the Justice Department itself and Janet Reno. A surfeit of newly released documents from the Justice Department make it clear that Ms. Reno became Mr. Gore's guardian angel, standing between her man and his accusers at every turn, even against senior members of her own staff. Mr. Gore was clearly on the brink of big legal trouble, but Ms. Reno single-handedly rescued his political career from the mire on the eve of his Presidential bid." --Wall Street Journal ______--------********O********--------______ POLITICS >From the Bush campaign journal... Two plaques bearing Confederate symbols were removed from the lobby of the Texas Supreme Court building one night last weekend, despite calls from Confederate heritage groups for a public hearing. The plaques -- appropriately -- contain an image of the Confederate battle flag and a quote from Gen. Robert E. Lee (who, incidentally, detested slavery but understood the importance of states' rights): "I rely upon Texas regiments in all tight places, and fear I have to call upon them too often. They have fought grandly, nobly...." Under the approval of Mr. Bush, Texas officials satisfied a small but vocal group of historical revisionists by replacing the plaques with new ones proclaiming equal justice is for all Texans "regardless of race, creed or color" -- except, of course, those interested in historical accuracy. The building, you see, was constructed with money taken from a Confederate pension fund and dedicated to Texans who served in the Confederacy. "We are heartened by the news that the hate symbols have been removed from the walls of the Texas Supreme Court," said Gary Bledsoe, president of the state conference of the NAACP. "They have presented an unnecessary stain on our judiciary, and hopefully this will cease and desist from this point on." A Bush spokesman said the new plaques demonstrate respect for the state's diversity. Memo to G.W.: Just one question. Will "diversity" trump the truth if you are elected president? *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U. S. C.
