IIRC, the earliest known Tarot deck dates from 15th or 16th century France.
The "Egyptian" connection alleged for the cards only appears after the
French conquest of Egypt under Napoleon, when everything Egyptian became all
the rage; self-proclaimed "authorities" on the occult such as Papus and
Eliphas Lvi, not to mention the Order of the Golden Dawn, were primary
vectors for this "revelation." Crowley's identification of the Tarot as "the
Book of Thoth" also contributes to the belief that the Tarot is Egyptian in
origin.

The cards can be used for divination -- to "predict the future" -- although
their accuracy is about on a par with that of econometrics, which is to say,
very poor. What they are VERY good for, IME, is divining what's going on
inside yourself...and this, as it happens, is what most genuine student of
the cards use them for. The Rider-Waite deck is extremely good for this.
It's no more pagan than a Rorschach ink-blot test, and a lot more
interesting to look at.
