: What does Neturei Karta mean? : To answer the question of what is the Neturei Karta we must first : consider the meaning of the the commonly used English terms 'Orthodox : Judaism' and 'Orthodox Jews', the answer to this for any beleiving Jew : is clear, Orthodox Judaism refers to the religion practised by Jews : through all generations, more specifically this means the study and : observence of tht Torah, the body laws and teachings that (as all : Orthodox Jews beleive) given to Moses by G-d and as later revealed : through the other Prophets and expounded in all generations until this : day by our great Rabbi's and Sage's who received the meaning and : interpretation of the Torah in a direct line of oral tradition from : Moses our teacher who in turn recieved it from God, this is what : should correctly be defined as Orthodox Judaism, all these laws and : teachings guide the life and World-view of every Orthodox Jew : individually and the Jewish people collectively in practise, and as is : explicitly stated in the Torah its teachings and laws are unchanging, : (Deuteronomy 12:32) "Everything that I command you you shall be : careful to do; you shall not add to it or take from it".(although what : the Torah requires of one may vary in different situations). We can : now go on to discuss the meaning of the term Neturei Karta, the term : Neturei Karta does not refer to a new movement or sect within Judaism, : it has come to be used in the past 70 years as a name for those Jews : who following the unchanging direction of the Torah and its Sages ( : see Why truly Orthodox Jews oppose Zionism and A collection of words : of Judaism's spiritual leaders of the past 150 years against Zionism : for the reason ) who remained the most steadfast in its opposition to : Zionism (in both its secular and so called "religious" forms) and the : Zionist 'state' viewing both the Zionist movement and their state as a : rebellion against G-d, although in truth many Jewish religious groups : both in and out of the holy land (all of whom it would be too numerous : to mention here) such as the Satmar and Toldos Aharon Hasidic groups : and also non Hasidic groups continue in their principalled oppostion : to Zionism and their 'state'. As a matter of interest the use of the : word Neturei Karta comes from story in the Jerusalem Talmud, a Jewish : sacred text where it is told that, Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Assi once : visited a city and asked its inhabitants, "Who are the guardians of : the City?". The people pointed in response to the policemen and : soldiers. To this the Sages replied, "These are not the Neturei Karta : (guardians of the city), the real guardians of the city are the sages : and pious men". The main branches of the Neturei Karta are in : Jerusalem, New York and London, although we have many other supporters : and funders worldwide. It may seem to some suprising that one of the : main branches of Neturei Karta is in Jerusalem since the whole essence : of the group is vhemently anti- Zionist this however is not the case, : among the Jewish people even in this current exile there have always : been certain spiritually elevated individuals who went to live in the : Holy Land because of a will to serve G-d in a higher atmosphere of : holiness, this however has always since the time of our exile been : governed according to the Torah lawby 2 conditions, 1) Only : individuals may leave the exile to live in the holy land but : mass-immigration to the Holy Land is forbidden, and 2) These : individuals must live as subjects of the non-Jewish government which : rules in the Holy Land ( this is derived in the Talmud tractate Ksubos : p110a from scriptural verses ), of course both these conditions are a : totally contradicted by the Zionists and their activities, Neturei : Karta in Jerusalem consists of individuals who do not recocnise the : Zionist 'state' and want to live under Arab rule, most of whom are : decendents of families who lived in Palestine peacefully under Arab : rule for up to 200 years before the Zionist occupation, here are a : couple of extracts from a letter written by Rabbi Amram Blau and Rabbi : Aharon Katzinellenbogen two late leaders of Neturei Karta Jerusalem : who both passed away around 20 years ago, to the UN which clearly : illustrates this point. : --------"We, the G-d fearing Jews who are the source of Judaism, who : beleive in our heavenly Father and guard his divine commandments, we : are the founders of the old Yishuv ( this refers to the old : settlements Jews in beginning of the eighteen hundrdeds which lived : peacefully as loyal citizens of the ruling Arab government ) in the : Holy Land. Our ancestors travelled here to the Holy Land amid great : danger and harsh conditions and settled here their families. the whole : purpose of their coming to settle here in the Holy Land was to : hishtakaya? here to raise their children and coming generations in an : atmosphere of truth and holiness"....... : ________"Our purpose and the purpose of our ancestors in coming here : (to the Holy Land) was free of any intention whatsoever of creationg a : state or any other such purpose and our coming here did not bother : anyone whatsever. We are taught to seek the the good peace and peace : of the country where we dwell, and so we lived in peace and were : friendly neighbours with all those living in the Holy Land"......... www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
