Judge Decides to Hear Clinton Disbarment Case

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - After a week of deliberating, a
recently appointed judge has decided to preside over the
disbarment case against President Clinton, a court clerk said
Tuesday.

The decision comes after four other judges all stepped aside from
the case, citing the appearance of conflicts of interest because
of links to former Gov. Clinton. Pulaski County Circuit Judge
Leon Johnson was assigned the case July 5 and has been
considering whether to keep it.

Johnson, appointed as a judge last month to fill a vacancy,
called the clerk's office Tuesday morning and said he would
accept the case, said Sherry Bruno, a supervisor in the office.

Though appointed by Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee, Johnson voted
in May in the Democratic primary election, a state voter
registration clerk said Thursday. Johnson also voted in the
Democratic primary runoff in 1998.

Clinton's case was assigned to Johnson after Judge Chris Piazza
stepped aside. Piazza said Clinton, as governor, had once named
him to a panel that hammered out state ethics laws. Three other
judges had refused the case earlier.

The lawsuit filed June 30 by the Supreme Court Committee on
Professional Conduct says Clinton is unfit to be a lawyer because
of his deceptive testimony in the Paula Jones sexual harassment
case about his relationship with former White House intern Monica
Lewinsky.

The committee based its lawsuit on complaints filed by U.S.
District Judge Susan Webber Wright, who presided over the Jones
case, and by the Atlanta-based Southeastern Legal Foundation.
Wright had cited Clinton for contempt and fined him $90,000.

The president has said the Arkansas committee was acting too
harshly and his lawyer, David Kendall, has said he would fight
"vigorously."

Johnson's appointment lasts only to the end of the year, when a
regularly elected judge will replace him. Just one candidate is
running, a Democrat. If the Clinton case lasts that long, the
new judge would replace him in the case.
