Prudy, you're right on target. Politicians have engaged in political
marriages since there *were* politicians--read Suetonius, *The Twelve
Caesars* (basis of Robert Graves's *I, Claudius* and *Claudius the God*) for
some egregious examples. For the hoi polloi, marriage has usually been a
matter of economics and property for about ninety-nine percent of the
history of the human race. Marriage "for love" has been the ideal only
since the Renaissance, and even then it was based on a highly romantic
understanding of the medieval "courtly love" which infused the popular
stories of King Arthur, Guenevere and Lancelot, Tristram and Iseult, etc.
And love-marriage has been the *norm* in Western society only for a little
more than a century. In most of the world it is still extremely rare. If
people enjoy reading about "weird marriages," I suggest they look at the
private lives of the real power elite, such as the Post's publisher Rupert
Murdoch. ("Sex Life of the Rich and Famous"?)
