"Because the United Nations has no real successes of it's
own to point to, textbooks have frequently given the UN
credit for winning World War II. History of America by
Southworth was widely used in the 1950's as an eighth
grade text history text. The text incorrectly tells how
when a great invasion force was assembled in England to
assault Hitler's Europe...
General Dwight Eisenhower of the United States Army
came from the Italian front to command this mighty new
United Nations force. (pg. 769)
Captions on the photographs show "United Nations troops
going ashore on D-Day." There is only one thing wrong
with the story. D-Day, when the Allied forces landed on
the French coast, was June 6, 1944. The United Nations
was founded in San Fransisco at a conference which opened
on April 25, 1945 - ten months after D-Day.
The war in the Pacific was pictured similarly. The student
who has been taught that the United Nations protected
America from Nazism and Mussolini's Fascism, would see
nothing wrong with looking to the U.N. to maintain world
peace and freedom. The Southworth text was not an
isolated example. Almost 15 years later, in the mid-1960's,
the Prentice-Hall text, Our Nation from Its Creation, by
Nathaniel Platt and Muriel Jean Drummond and a companion
10th grade world history text by the same authors, used
the same approach. In a review by the Richmond, Virginia
News Leader said of the book:
In its discussion of the campaigns of World War II, it
uses terminology that will come as a great surprise
to those who fought in those campaigns.
Throughout the text, in both headlines and narrative,
the authors refer to Allied campaigns as having been
waged by the "United Nations".... The text is absurd
with casual references made to "Commander Eisenhower
and his United Nations advisers planning D-Day events"
and "United Nations troops entering Rome in 1944."
Of course, the UN was not formed until almost a year later.
