42 Million Sacagaweas Down the Drain
The U.S. Mint admits squandering 42 million tax dollars begging
Americans to use the unneeded Sacagawea dollar, but a poll says
most people have never gotten even one of the golden coins.
And most of those who have received a Sacagawea are hoarding them
instead of using them.
A USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll of 1,063 adults last weekend found
that only 46 percent have received one of the dollars, and more
than 80 percent of recipients are keeping 'em.
Mint Director Jay Johnson insists the coin is meeting
expectations. "It takes time to build up," he said. "A year
from now or two years from now I hope we just pull the coin from
our pocket and put it into the soda vending machine."
Right, just like we did with the Mint's greatest fiasco, the
Susan B. Anthony dollar. One bright side: At least Sacagawea
doesn't have that hideous scowl on her mug.
Question: Did the Mint unload 42 million Sacagaweas on its ad
agency?
