Churches seek int'l pledge on Jerusalem
By Joseph Algazy

The heads of three churches - Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox -
met yesterday with representatives of the Palestinian Authority and said they
want international guarantees on the future of Jerusalem.

The meeting was held at the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in the Old City of
Jerusalem. The delegation was led by the Latin Patriarch, Michel Sabah.
The Palestinian side consisted of Faisal Husseini, who holds the Jerusalem
portfolio for the Palestine Liberation Organization; Ziyad Abu Zayad, who holds
the same portfolio in the PA; Ahmed Hashem Zraiyer, chairman of the Jerusalem
committee in the PA's Legislative Council (parliament); and Dr. Hanan Ashrawi.

The clerics expressed their opposition to the idea of putting the Christian
Quarter under Palestinian sovereignty while the Armenian Quarter remained under
Jewish sovereignty. They reiterated their proposal that Jerusalem be granted a
special status, backed by international guarantees, that would ensure freedom
of access to the holy places of all three monotheistic religions and freedom of
worship to all believers.

The Palestinians said they too were opposed to the idea of splitting the two
quarters. "The Christian churches and the Palestinians are in one camp as
regards the future of Jerusalem," Abu Zayad said after the meeting.

A Palestinian source said yesterday that the "Palestinian street" is divided
over the proposals put forward by the churches.

Supporters say that the idea of international guarantees is consistent with the
joint statement issued by the Vatican and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on
the eve of Pope John Paul's visit to the Holy Land last March.

However, opponents of the idea say the churches' proposals could hurt Arafat's
bargaining position at Camp David. They added that they were surprised by the
churches' request to be part of the Camp David negotiations.

The libertarian therefore considers one of his prime educational
tasks is to spread the demystification and desanctification of the
State among its hapless subjects. His task is to demonstrate
repeatedly and in depth that not only the emperor but even the
"democratic" State has no clothes; that all governments subsist
by exploitive rule over the public; and that such rule is the reverse
of objective necessity. He strives to show that the existence of
taxation and the State necessarily sets up a class division between
the exploiting rulers and the exploited ruled. He seeks to show that
the task of the court intellectuals who have always supported the State
has ever been to weave mystification in order to induce the public to
accept State rule and that these intellectuals obtain, in return, a
share in the power and pelf extracted by the rulers from their deluded
subjects.
