Why are advertisers boycotting outspoken radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger?
They covet the lucrative homosexual market, industry observers say.
Companies including GEICO, SkyTel Communications, Xerox and Toys �R� Us have
yanked their ads from Dr. Laura�s radio show, ABC News reports, and Procter
& Gamble has backed out of advertising on her fall TV show.

"Companies are more interested in the gay market than ever,� said John
Aravosis, president of Wired Strategies, a Washington online marketing and
consulting company and co-founder of the anti-Schlessinger Web site
StopDrLaura.com.

Homosexuals have more "disposable� income, according to research, largely
because most of them don�t have children to raise. Homosexual consumers are
twice as likely to own a vacation home, 5.9 times as likely to have a home
theater and eight times as likely to own a laptop computer than
heterosexuals, according to Simmons Market Research Bureau.

"The bottom line is that as a market we are very brand loyal when we make
purchases,� said Cathy Renna of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
"The controversy over Dr. Laura has been the most obvious demonstration of
our influence as a market.�

The pro-family, pro-responsibility Schlessinger has characterized
homosexuals as a product of "biological error� and their practices as
"deviant." She later issued a clarification stating that she did not want
her words to "contribute in any way to an atmosphere of hate or intolerance.
Regrettably, some of the words I've used have hurt some people, and I am
sorry for that." Scripture, says Dr. Laura, condemns homosexual behavior as
a sin but not homosexuals themselves, columnist Larry Elder noted today.

Pressure groups have responded by hounding advertisers into dumping Dr.
Laura.

StopDrLaura.com reports that priceline.com and Natrol dietary supplements
remain as advertisers, while other companies who have dropped Schlessinger
are More.com, BoxLot, United Airlines, AT&T, American Express, Kraft,
General Foods, Amica Insurance and TCF Bank.

Those who usually rush to defend any perceived attack on First Amendment
freedom of speech are notably silent, if not actually attacking
Schlessinger.

"It�s ironic that those behind this Web site preaching the right to their
free speech will not allow Dr. Laura to have her right exercised,� stated
Premiere Radio Networks, the producer of Dr. Laura.

While many companies wish to avoid any controversy, others are wooing
homosexuals� dollars. ABC News reported Wednesday that Subaru ads in certain
markets have featured lesbian Martina Navratilova and the slogan "It�s Not A
Choice. It�s The Way We�re Built.�

"The ads are very specific and very obviously targeted to the gay and
lesbian market,� Renna said.
