Bob, rather than use my own words, I'm going to respond by sharing two
messages posted to the "July 30 in Philly" list, where a spirited discussion
along these same lines has been raging for some time. -- Bob

Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love... it
creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.... ---

It turns us into them. What is it we want? Is it a process that recognizes
the dignity of every human being than treats each alike? Violence not only
begets violence, it justifies the violence of the other side.

In Chicago, Seattle and Washington, low bail and "released on own
recognizance" was standard with few exceptions. Not because the cities were
being nice, but because they did not want their courts used as a forum for
messages they did not want to hear.

Philadelphia has helped the cause. Yes, there are sacrifices being made and
to be made. I do not diminish the pain of sitting in jail and being tried in
a criminal proceeding. For the strong and the dedicated it will be turned
into an opportunity.

"Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love... it

Violence justifies greater violence of the other side.

Change is an evolutionary process. It is not accomplished by turning over
dumpsters, trashing air conditioner repair person's cars, scaring young
women by jumping on their cars, screaming and graffitiing all over the
place. It is not accomplished by trashing police cars or blocking
intersections.

Some people reported they were doing these things for fun. The problems in
this country may be fun for them; they are not fun for every one. Violence
is the reaction of the weak and not fully dedicated. It takes greater
strength of purpose to avoid violence. King and Ghandi understood this,
lived by it and prevailed against greater forces of repression than exist in
this country.

I understand the pain of jail and the fear of criminal trials. But for those
who are strongly dedicated, the City has given an opportunity to use the
courts as a forum for the message. Chicago, Seattle and Washington
understood this. That is why bails were low or non existent for most. They
did not want public trials. Chicago did try the Chicago seven (some of whom
I bailed out). They and their message are remembered. No one remembers the
judge or the district attorney. Philadelphia, without wanting to, has given
an opportunity to be heard.

We all understand that we ARE making a difference. That's why you see smiles
on the faces of so many activists, including the ones who got beat up by the
cops. If we weren't making a difference, they wouldn't be arresting certain
activists and holding them on $1 million bail.
