The idea that earthly existence is a kind of purgatory for sinners before
they finally ascend to Heaven is actually a fairly common belief among
Hasidic Jews. It seems to have been a syncretistic borrowing from both
Christianity and Gnosticism, both of which are strongly dualistic. The
major difference is that while Christianity regards the physical world as
esssentially good because it was created by a good God, Gnosticism tends to
view the physical world as evil, corrupt, and corrupting, because it was
created to *imprison* spirit in flesh. This latter belief, alien to
pre-Diaspora Judaism, entered Judaism by way of the mystical tradition of
the Kabbalah during the Middle Ages, which also spawned the largely
Christian ceremonial magic tradition. Hasidism emerged during the
Eighteenth Century as a sort of popularization of the Kabbalah, taking over
many of the more bizarre elements without the true mystical insight that
guided earlier students. And it is *really* bizarre to find this particular
teaching becoming an issue in Israeli politics.
