 Nuclear Bomb Lost off Greenland?
UPI
Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000
COPENHAGEN, Denmark – A Danish newspaper reports a nuclear bomb, lost in the
1968 crash of an American B-52 bomber, is still lying on the seabed off
Greenland.
The newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, said Sunday that the unarmed hydrogen bomb
was not found 32 years ago, despite U.S. assurances to Denmark that cleanup
work had been completed.

Denmark, a NATO member, has sovereignty over Greenland. According to the news
report, a Pentagon spokesman said he could not comment on the report.

The U.S. air base at Thule, in northern Greenland, is now considered as
largely an early warning radar site.

But it is generally acknowledged that nuclear weapons were stored there
during the Cold War.

According to the news report, a B-52 crashed off the coast of Greenland in
January of 1968 and three of its four bombs were destroyed, but the fourth
was said to have broken through the ice and sunk. According to the news
report as many as 1,200 workers from Denmark and Greenland were used in the
lengthy cleanup of nuclear material reportedly spread over a 20-acre area.

There are now widespread reports of cancer among some of the workers
involved, with many of them asking for recompense from the U.S. government.
The news report claimed that papers belonging to the U.S. Atomic Energy
Commission, and obtained by some seeking damages, show the Pentagon carried
on searching for the lost bomb.

According to Mogens Bosen, leader of a group of employees on the airbase,
"U.S. authorities hid the disappearance of this nuclear bomb on Danish
territory from the Danish authorities."

Denmark handles Greenland's foreign, security and defense policy. According
to the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, "Detective work by former Thule
workers indicates an unexploded nuclear bomb probably still lies on the
seabed off Thule." the newspaper said Denmark told about the air crash 32
years ago, but not about the missing bomb.

The newspaper report said U.S. officials at the Pentagon have refused to
discuss the crashed B-52 or the missing bomb.
