TEL AVIV (August 16) - Tel Aviv police are investigating whether the deaths of four women yesterday in a brothel fire was part of a recent series of fires in sex shops and brothels, and whether the blaze was set as part of a dispute between gangs, by a haredi modesty patrol, or a deranged individual. Police officials emphasized that these three theories are not the only options and there is not sufficient evidence to point to any one of them. The torching of a south Tel Aviv apartment that functioned as a brothel killed the four women who lived and worked there early yesterday morning, South Tel Aviv Precinct commander Lt.-Cmdr. Menashe Arbiv said. It appears the fire was set at several points in the apartment, another police official said. There also were fires at two escort services, located on Ibn Gvirol and La Guardia streets, early yesterday morning. No one was injured and serious damage was not caused in these fires. While police are investigating possible links among the three fires - as well as the torching of two escort services, a sex shop, and a porno video store near Rehov Allenby during Tisha Be'av last week - they also are investigating the fatal fire separately, since it was so much more serious than the others, Arbiv said. Tel Aviv police chief Cmdr. Shlomo Aharonishky appointed an investigation team from the district's Central Division, which deals with serious crimes, to investigate the fires from all angles. The manager of the torched brothel was questioned yesterday afternoon, he said. Neighbors and workers in the area also are being questioned. The victims have not yet been identified. At least one is believed to be Israeli, one is believed to be from Bat Yam, and the others are believed to be Russian. Acting Interior Minister Haim Ramon has appointed a three-member committee to investigate the cause of the fire, the firefighters response to it, and coordination between firefighters and other emergency services at the scene. The committee is to submit its conclusions by August 30. Holon fire chief Avi Piritz, who is chairing the committee, said the fire appeared to have been set by an arsonist, because it was so extensive. "The apartment was completely destroyed and everyone with any sense of logic realizes that such a fire does not occur naturally, but was set," he said. Piritz also said that, while it is logical to look for a connection between the seven fires, that is not within his committee's mandate. Shortly after 4 a.m. yesterday, residents of a two-story building on Rehov Golomb heard screams for help coming from a first-floor apartment that housed a brothel. They called police, who contacted firefighters and Magen David Adom. The emergency workers evacuated residents from the other apartments, none of whom was injured. They had difficulty getting into the blazing apartment, because the windows were barred and the fire had melted the plastic fixture around the door and they had to fight to open it, Piritz said. They found the body of one woman and a critically injured woman inside the apartment, the police spokeswoman said. The injured woman died shortly afterwards. After extinguishing the fire, which spread to the second floor and destroyed the apartment directly above, emergency workers found the bodies of two other women, who had tried to escape the fire in a closet. Piritz declined to say whether the women burned to death or died of smoke inhalation, saying that it will take a few days until the autopsies are completed. Residents and workers from the area said it was widely known that the apartment was a brothel and secular and religious men of all ages were seen entering and leaving it at all hours of the day and night. Most of the buildings on Rehov Golomb are used for light industry, though some foreign workers also reside there.
