Excuse me, Amelia, but that should be "coca", not "cocoa"... Not that this is
the first time the two have been confused, however. When the Spanish arrived in
South America, I've heard, they discovered the natives chewing funny-tasting
leaves and drinking a strange, dark hot beverage. After a while of chewing the
leaves and imbibing the hot drink, los Indios became decidedly intoxicated; and
accordingly the Spanish, wishing only to protect the common good, banned the
consumption of cocoa.
It should be noted that the unprocessed leaves of the coca plant are nowhere
near as potent in their effect that the refined extract called cocaine.
