FBI Falls on Sword Over LaFon Story
Charles C. Thompson II and Tony Hays,
Special to the SavannahJournal.com
SAVANNAH, TENN (SavannahJournal.com) On Friday, September 8,
2000, as an Accuracy in Media special report concerning a federal
narcotics investigation involving Al Gores uncle, former judge
Whit LaFon was being distributed, the FBI leapt to the 82 year
old LaFons defense, but ended up skewered on its own sword.
The AIM article, authored by former 60 Minutes producer Charles
C. Thompson II and Tennessee journalist Tony Hays also detailed
charges of racism, possible vehicular homicide, destruction of a
Native American cultural site, against LaFon, brother of Pauline
LaFon Gore, and a close advisor of Al Gores. According to one
senior national political correspondent, LaFon is as close as
you can get to Gore, and yet the national media is reluctant to
pick up the story. The story offers evidence of LaFons attempts
to use his nephews position for financial gain, as well as law
enforcements tracking of mysterious planes landing on the
Tennessee River near LaFons rustic cabin.
Mark Post, the Jackson FBI supervisor, had confirmed details of
the investigation and LaFons part in it to Thompson and Hays in
late June and again in July. But when contacted by WBBJ-TV in
Jackson, Post, who said he had been ordered to refute the AIM
report by the number two man in the FBI, denied that federal
agents had ever targeted LaFon and that other details of the
story were complete falsehoods. The reporter, Misty Shay Cole,
then interviewed Thompson and Hays, who paraded all their
documentation including a number of witnesses who contradicted
Posts version of events. This included maps of the area where
LaFons cabin is located. Post had earlier confirmed that the
FBI flew in a surveillance plane over LaFons property. He now
denied that had ever happened. But Bill Darnell, a local
aviation buff told the television reporter that he had seen the
surveillance mission in progress. A local officer told Cole that
he had attended at least two FBI meetings where the investigation
of LaFon was discussed by FBI special agents Christopher Gicking
and Todd Adams. Post refused to allow Agents Gicking and Adams
speak to reporters. Youve overwhelmed them, Cole told the
journalists. Later, however, some 15 seconds before it was to
air, the story was pulled by attorneys for the station because
LaFon wasnt available for comment.
Just three days after Post jumped on his sword, the Jackson Sun
carried a story about his sudden transfer from Jackson to
Washington in an allegedly dead-end job. Tennessee reporters say
that Whit LaFon has disappeared. However, LaFon called Jesse
Powers, Chief of Police in tiny Scotts Hill, Tenn. to complain
about being under investigation. Powers routed him to Decatur
County Sheriff Glenn Wallace. Both lawmen allegedly denied any
knowledge, and LaFon called them liars. In the words of one area
lawman, LaFon is raising hell on the highest levels.
