Paper Trails: Clinton blames newspaper for disbarment proceeding
By CARRIE RENGERS
ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
"These days, the prospect of being stripped of his law license
horrifies him.
For several days before the judicial ethics committee's decision
to pursue disbarment came down, Clinton had been predicting the
very action the panel took ... .
The panel was biased, he told aides, since everyone on the panel
who knew or had supported him had been hectored into recusing
themselves from the vote.
"This is a setup deal," Clinton insisted, according to a friend
who talked with him. "
-- Washington Post writer John Harris in a Sept. 10 article
about President Clinton's final year in office
The White House recently released a full transcript of Harris'
interview with Clinton, in which he blames the Arkansas
Democrat-Gazette for the lawyer discipline committee's decision
in May to initiate disbarment proceedings against him.
The blame came just a few minutes after Clinton told the same
interviewer that " ... I don't make a big habit of questioning
the motives of people who are on the other side of arguments from
me."
When Harris then asked about Arkansas -- a "place where it seems
like somebody is always crawling out from under some rock" --
Clinton lamented the loss of what he calls the "progressive"
Arkansas Gazette.
"And it got in this newspaper war and the man that won is a
hard-core, conservative Republican with a long-standing
opposition to me," Clinton said of Democrat-Gazette Publisher
Walter Hussman Jr.
"They basically intimidated all the good people off that
committee," Clinton said of this newspaper's series of articles
on some disbarment committee members' campaign contributions to
the president and the Democratic party.
Clinton also referenced Democrat-Gazette editorials and said the
"newspaper was in a tirade daily against us."
Committee members who participated in the vote seem surprised
that Clinton would say they were not "good people" and accuse
them of being part of a setup. But few wanted to comment about
the article.
"Well, I've never seen that remark made," says Ken Reeves,
committee chairman. "I'd be surprised if he made it, and I
wouldn't comment in response."
Reeves says he's not saying Clinton didn't make the remark, but
he says, "It doesn't sound like something someone in his
situation would say. It doesn't ring true to me."
He specifically points to the unidentified source who quoted
Clinton about the "setup" and says that's getting further removed
from the president.
"That's why I said what I did," Reeves says.
Committee member John Rush says, "Nothing really surprises me,"
but he says he has not heard any of the president's remarks,
either.
"I wouldn't have any response to that," Rush says.
Committee member Jacqueline Cravens says she prefers to defer to
Chairman Reeves, though she does question the president's
accusation.
"I don't think that is a true comment," Cravens says about a
possible setup. "We treated him like we treated anyone else.
It was a fair and impartial process."
Reeves adds, "There were some very good committee members that
recused for very good reasons."
Committee member Mike Cogbill declined to give his response to
the president's remarks, and members Sue Winter and Win Trafford
couldn't be reached for comment.
Any committee members dismayed by Clinton's accusations can
always choose instead to focus on his remarks from a few minutes
earlier in the interview in which he cautioned against judging
people who don't share one's views.
" ... I have learned enough from my own mistakes in life and
also from misjudging other people to know that an analysis based
solely on what other people's motives are -- you need to try to
understand them."
