This particular item (that none of the Alaskan crude goes to the continental
U.S.) was widely reported when the Alaska pipeline came on line. The ostensible
rationale was that it was cheaper to ship the petroleum directly to Japan from
Alaska than to ship it to West Coast refineries for U.S. consumption--nothing
was ever said at the time, IIRC, about sulfur content. (In fact, Alaska *is*
closer to the northern Japanese islands than it is to California, so this
argument makes a certain kind of sense.) There was a direct tradeoff, sending
the Alaska crude to Asia and increasing U.S. reliance on *Nigerian* crude. I do
not believe that there was any change in oil imports from the Middle East, but
then all of this was taking place in the aftermath of the Arab oil boycott.
BTW, if the Alaska crude has too high a sulfur content to be used in this
country, why the hell is G.W. Bush so keen on opening up the ANWR to drilling?
Whom does he intend to benefit by the added production? (And yes, that's a
rhetorical question...)
