Yemen Says Has Evidence Ship Blast Planned
ADEN (Reuters) - Yemen said on Monday it had evidence the blast
that crippled a U.S. Navy warship killing 17 American sailors in
the southern Yemeni port of Aden was a "planned criminal act."
President Ali Abdullah Saleh told General Tommy Franks, the
commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command, that "preliminary
results and important evidence reached by security forces in
Yemen...indicate that it was a planned criminal act," the
official Saba news agency reported.
Saleh had initially said Thursday's blast was not a deliberate
act, while U.S. officials said it was an apparent suicide
attack. Saba did not say if the president briefed Franks, who
later visited the ship, on the reported evidence.
But U.S. officials said both sides have been working closely
together. Rear Admiral Mark Fitzgerald said Yemen's support for
the salvage and investigation operation "has remained outstanding
and we're very happy with that."
U.S. officials said work, including repairing leaks and
restoring power, was continuing on the warship, anchored in port
with a gaping hole clearly visible in its side.
RETRIEVING BODIES U.S. Navy divers have been trying to retrieve
more bodies from the tangled wreck, but none of the missing
victims had been recovered by Monday evening.
"They were primarily today doing survey. They did some repair
work and were searching, but did not recover any bodies,"
Fitzgerald said of the divers. "It's a slow process."
Five bodies of sailors have already been retrieved, while two are
in view in the wreckage but so far out of reach, officials said.
Ten sailors are missing and presumed dead.
U.S. Navy officials have said a small boat in a group helping to
moor the Cole for refuelling was laden with explosives and blew
up alongside the ship, one of the world's most sophisticated
guided missile destroyers.
Witnesses described two men aboard the boat as standing to
attention just before it exploded.
A Yemeni official earlier said the authorities had arrested
dozens of suspects for questioning in connection with the
incident.
NOT CLEAR WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE Defense Secretary William Cohen
said on Sunday there was little doubt the incident was a
"terrorist" attack, but said the United States was no closer to
determining who carried it out.
He said Osama bin Laden, the Saudi exile wanted by the United
States for allegedly masterminding the 1998 bombings of U.S.
embassies in East Africa, was among those being investigated.
At least two Muslim groups have said they were responsible.
Cohen said investigators took all claims seriously, but it was
"premature to speculate."
The United States has sent about 100 personnel to Yemen to
conduct the investigation and salvage operation, codenamed
Determined Response. They include Federal Bureau of Investigation
agents and a marine security platoon.
A U.S. defense official said talks were under way with a
Norwegian firm to transport the 9,100-tonwarship back to the
United States for repairs aboard a heavy-lift vessel, which has
capacity to carry a 30,000-tonship. He said the operation could
go ahead in a week to 10 days.
Officials have said a patch-up job to sail the ship back was
unlikely because the bomb, which had power akin to a sea-
skimming missile, ripped a 30-by-40 foot (nine-by-12 meter) hole
along the waterline and buckled the decks.
