Pentagon Defends Gala for Valenti

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon (news - web sites) on Thursday
defended spending taxpayer money for a dinner for Hollywood's
Jack Valenti, saying he has helped promote the military in films
- something that helps boost recruiting.
Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said he didn't know the cost of
the event Thursday night in Beverly Hills, but a Pentagon source
who spoke on condition of anonymity said it was estimated at
$350,000, possibly higher.
Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen invited some 350
celebrities, Pentagon officials and legislators to the dinner to
give a citizenship award to Valenti, head of the Motion Picture
Association of America.
``He has been extremely helpful; he has been the liaison at times
between our department and the film industry on certain issues''
and has helped foster a positive image of the armed forces in
television and movies, Bacon said in response to a question at
the regular Pentagon briefing.
The secretary felt the event was a way to honor Valenti and ``use
him as a symbol for what he thinks is a more positive portrayal
of the military in film over the last couple of years,'' Bacon
said.
Movies such as the new ``Men of Honor,'' about a Navy diver, add
``to a climate of understanding ... about the military that
wouldn't otherwise exist,'' Bacon said.
Officials have worried about the growing disconnect between the
military and America's civilians and ultimately how it affects
support for people in uniform and recruiting.
With the nation's draft long over, the all-volunteer force and a
long-booming economy that provides other job opportunities, fewer
and fewer people have a family member or know someone who is
serving or has served in the military.
