BILL WEIGHS IN: GORE CARRIED FLORIDA

President Clinton says Al Gore won Florida and "America will be
embarrassed in front of the world" unless his veep gets the
recounts he wants to prove it, reports say.
Clinton weighed in for Gore to two foreign reporters at a time
when Clinton appointees are refusing to give the keys to the
transition office to George W. Bush, despite his certification as
Florida winner.
"If the votes were counted, Al Gore would carry the state,"
Clinton was quoted as saying. "America will be embarrassed in
front of the world if the votes are not counted."
The White House had no comment on the report - which flies in the
face of Clinton's public claim to be staying above the fray on
the election mess - but didn't dispute it.
Hilary MacKenzie of Canada's Ottawa Citizen, and Stefan Simons of
the German weekly Der Spiegel, say they ran into Clinton at a
Washington book party Wednesday and chatted for about half an
hour.
They say they wrote down their recollections right afterward.
MacKenzie told The Associated Press that she identified herself
to Clinton as a reporter and gave him her business card.
She reported yesterday that Clinton "passionately dissected the
minutiae of each county's votes" and concluded that Gore really
won Florida by at least 100 votes instead of losing by 537.
Clinton ardently pushed for Gore's election as part of his own
historical legacy. GOP critics note he also has a vested interest
- if special prosecutor Robert Ray indicts Clinton for lying
under oath about Sexgate, he could want a presidential pardon.
The two reporters say they met Clinton at a book party for his
ex-national security adviser, Tony Lake, who has just published
"Six Nightmares: Real Threats in a Dangerous World and How
America Can Meet Them."
