U.N. announces 61 new world heritage sites

PARIS (AP) -- The Chinese cradle of Taoism, Mount Qinchen, and a
Welsh mining town, Blaenavon, were among 61 places listed
Thursday as among the world's most precious cultural sites.

For the first time, sites in Azerbaijian, Malaysia, Nicaragua and
Suriname were included on the list that now contains 691 sites in
122 countries, said a statement from the Paris-based United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Azerbaijan's Walled City of Baku, Nicaragua's Ruin's of Leon
Viejo, the Central Suriname Nature Reserve and two sites in
Malaysia -- Kinabulu Park and Gunung Mulu National Park -- were
selected as part of the committee's effort to improve the
"geographical balance" of the list.

Blaenavon, on of the gritty pit towns that helped drive Britain's
19th-century industrialization, was home to the Big Pit colliery
and a huge ironworks. The mine closed in 1980 and is now a
museum, while the ironworks is being restored.

The committee, a branch of UNESCO, is holding its 24th annual
meeting in Cairns, Australia.

The historic center of Brugge, Belgium, and France's Loire Valley
were also added to the list of sites considered to have
"outstanding cultural value," the statement said.

Earlier this week, the committee updated its list of endangered
world heritage sites with three new spots that it deemed
threatened by natural destruction or lack of preservation.

To that list, it added the historic city of Zabid, in Yemen, the
Fort and terraced Shalamar Gardens in Pakistan, and the Djoudj
National Bird Sanctuary in Senegal, a wetland that is home to 1.5
million birds, including the purple heron and the great egret.
