U.S. WELCOMES BACK THE COLE

The crippled USS Cole had a bittersweet homecoming yesterday as
it arrived in the United States two months after it was ripped
open by a suicide bomb that killed 17 crew members.
With a tarp covering the 40-by-40-foot hole on its port side, the
$1 billion high-tech U.S. warship docked in Pascagoula, Miss.,
the shipyard where it had been christened in 1995.
The ship traveled piggyback style from the Middle East on the
Norwegian heavy-lift ship Blue Marlin.
"It's a sad occasion when you think of the 17 sailors who died,"
said Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.), who was on hand for the Cole's
arrival.
The somber arrival came as U.S. and Yemeni investigators began a
global manhunt for a man identified as the mastermind of the Cole
bombing, who is linked directly to terror master Osama bin Laden.
The Aegis-class missile destroyer will be repaired at Litton
Ingalls Shipbuilding, the same company that built the ship.
Den Knecht, an Ingalls vice president, said the repairs are
expected to take a year and cost almost $240 million.
"I hate to see it coming back in that shape," Ingalls carpenter
B.C. Lee told reporters.
The Cole's arrival back in the United States is not the end of
the ordeal for many of the ship's officers.
Pentagon sources said the ship's captain faces possible
discipline for not fully implementing security procedures while
the USS Cole was in dangerous Aden harbor.
The Cole was attacked Oct. 12 when two suicide bombers driving a
small speedboat loaded with explosives slammed into its side
during a refueling stop in Aden.
U.S. and Yemeni officials believe the attack was orchestrated by
bin Laden, the Afghanistan-based Saudi exile who has vowed to
drive American forces from Muslim holy lands.
Yemen has six suspects in custody that it plans to put on trial
next month. But Yemen's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, said the
mastermind of the plot is still at large.
"We are looking for the man who gave instructions to the two
people who executed this operation. His name is Mohammed Omar
al-Harazi. He's the main suspect who funded the operation and
paid for the safe houses in Aden. He's the mastermind but we
believe someone else was behind him," Saleh said.
U.S. counter-terrorism officials believe al-Harazi, a Yemeni who
now is a Saudi citizen, is an explosives expert and key operative
for bin Laden's al-Qaeda organization.
Officials also say al-Harazi is a cousin of the suicide bomber
who blew up the U.S. embassy in Kenya in Aug. 1998. Bin Laden
has been indicted in federal court in Manhattan for orchestrating
that attack.
