While it should be abundently clear by now that I am in favor of
DECENTRALIZATION of power, I can see why Europe would want to centralize
economic power. Centralization of economic power is the only effective
way to fight the 600 lb. gorilla that currently domonates the world. By
combining economic forces, Europe would have a combined GDP that
surpasses the U.S., while still maintaining a social system that provides
a REAL safety net for the poor. The U.S. has yet to wake up to the fact
that they have to play nice now. The U.S. can no longer count on their
economic and military power to get what they want. If Canada and Mexico
get tired of the shafting they get in trade agreements with the U.S. they
may go elsewhere, further freezing out the U.S. I do believe that
Kharma has finally caught up with the U.S., and it is time to reassess
their place in the world.
The other real threat to U.S. economic dominance on the world is China.
China has geared up to make rapid economic growth over the next 20 years
(and this planning ahead is what the U.S. has forgotten in the quest for
the bottom line growth RIGHT NOW) and will be a major economic player
soon. China already has a large military, so combined with a large GDP,
China will be a major power player in the future. If China is able to
set aside old hatreds with their neighbors in the Pacific Rim, they may
yet form an economic block that is truly formidable. All this, of course
is putting politics aside and talking economics only. That is why the
political maneuvering is so important. Hence the big push by the right
in the U.S. to cast China as the main villain, the current boogyman, the
great menace. China has adopted capitalism and has the resources to grow
mightily. That is the real threat the U.S. perceives, and rightly so.
So here we have the 600lb gorilla about to face both an economically
coheasive EU, and China who is on economic steroids and growing fast.
The gorilla has not played nice with Canada or Mexico, and is alienating
most of Central and South America with its policies of interference. Is
it any wonder that the U.S. is getting mighty nervous? If the EU and the
Pacific Rim (with China as a partner) decide to make blanket trade
agreements instead of separate trade agreements country by country, the
U.S. will be in a very poor position. If foreign investors start pulling
out of the U.S. the sucking sound will be the effective death rattle of
the 600lb gorilla.
