Absolutely. Catch 22 and all.
However, the essence of war is the sacrifice of the few in defense of
the many. Fewer people were sacrificed at Pearl Harbor to bring
Americans into the war than were sacrificed at Coventry to protect the
secrets of Enigma and radar, and the deaths at Coventry were almost all
civilians. Yet I here no complaints about that. So let's look at this in
perspective.
The men who died at Pearl Harbor enlisted in the military for the
specific purpose of giving their lives for their country if ordered to
do so. What happened was the their commander-in-chief, in effect,
ordered them to give their lives for their country and they did it.
C'est la guerre. They are no deader than the men who died on Omaha Beach
for exactly the same reason. They were doing their job, nothing more,
nothing less. We salute them, and honor their memory. They have been
suitably avenged. That's enough. Let's move on.
If anyone besides the Japanese imperialists are to blame for the deaths
at Pearl Harbor it is the leaders of the American isolationist movement
who made FDR's deception necessary, and the Anglo-American capitalists
who financed the fascists' rise to power in the first place.
