-Caveat Lector- >If anybody remembers the contrived gas shortages of the 1970s, they will remember that the ultimate result was to make gas prices IMMEDIATELY rise from 30 odd to 60 odd cents per gallon and for them to remain PERMANENTLY RAISED. How's that for a neat way to multiply corporate profits at no corporate expense? I was living an hour outside of New Haven. Gas cost $.32 a gallon and you could buy all you want. Then it cost $1.40 a gallon and you could only buy $1.00 worth at a time and there was a line. I had to move into New Haven because otherwise I couldnt commute to work and my wife couldnt get to school. We gave up a nice place on the beach to do it. I took a walk one day down by the harbor. There were four, count em FOUR, tankers at anchor. They were all lying low in the water, full to the brim. And there they sat while the price went up. They sat there for weeks on end. After a while the price dropped to $.89 a gallon and you could buy all you wanted. People were so happy that they forgot all about it costing only $.32 a gallon only two months before. When I suggested chicanery might be behind it, people laughed at me and called me a conspiracy theorist. Everybody knew it was all the fault of the ragheads. >Wow--does that intimate that the precipitious stock market plunge might be contrived too?..........
