It cost 35 cents a gallon IN New Haven, when I attended Sick-Sick (SCSC -- now SCSU)
in 1971...
And I thought THAT was a lot of money, because the year before, when I'd first gotten
my driver's license, gas
was about 8 cents a gallon cheaper...
Then it went up to 50 cents a gallon, and I remember we all thought that was an
outrageous price...but were
sure that it would NEVER go so high as to cost over a dollar a gallon... :-7

And you could only buy gas if it was your designated day to do so...I forget what the
exact system was, but it
was based on odd-even days of the month, and what letter either your last name or your
license plate began
with, I forget which...

Yes, it was later shown that there WAS no 'shortage', and in fact the big oil
companies had had plenty of
reserve oil anchored offshore (as you observed), and the whole thing was manipulated
by them just so that the
prices could be artificially inflated to an extent that the public wouldn't have
accepted otherwise...
