Judge Freezes Lazio Campaign Money
NEW YORK (AP) -- A state judge has frozen nearly $540,000 left
from Rep. Rick Lazio's failed U.S. Senate campaign race against
Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Supreme Court Justice Phyllis Gangel-Jacob barred the Lazio 2000
campaign from using the money before a hearing next week on
whether any or all of it should go to fund raiser Laura Van Hove.
Van Hove claims Lazio 2000 owes her $1.4 million for fund raising
work she did for the Long Island congressman's race against
Clinton. She is one of 26 creditors with $2.7 million in claims
against the campaign.
Federal election records show that Lazio 2000 is $3.4 million in
debt but has assets of $631,000, according to Van Hove's court
papers.
