-Caveat Lector-

Boy, have you got one cruel nastry streak!!

I still remember when I first saw Elizabeth Taylor. She was five
years old and she ran across a field in Lassie Come Home. I was
probably around 4, myself, but she took my breath away. I had
never seen anyone so beautiful. And I will never ever forget National
Velvet. Or Junior Miss.

We live in a celebrity culture and the celebrity circle gets smaller
and smaller. These people are promoted to us as people who are
"somebody"--who are living "real" lives while the rest of us sit in
front of our TVs and watch, living our marginalized lives.

I grew up in a household with a father who was an international
showbiz celebrity in the 20's and 30s. In the late 20s, he was the
toast of Paris and London, feted by the Kings of Norway and
Sweden and the Prince of Wales. He was a dancer/comedian and
by the time I was born his career was just hitting the downslope--
dancers having a time limit on their careers. I know the inside of
that story and how cruel the world can be when you've won the
world's attention and gotten used to the limelight and then you
can't keep it. To his credit, he worked for years for the USO,
touring veteran's hospitals after WWII, and years and years later,
when he died, actually had a military burial at sea for his service,
although he had never formally served in the armed forces.

I am now around Elizabeth Taylor's age and, amazingly, I actually
look a lot better now than she does. However, I have not
accomplished what she has nor given the world as much pleasure
as she has. For God's sake, she has been through all sorts of
medical stuff for decades, including a recent brain tumor and is
surely on debilitating medication.

On the one hand, it's sad to see her now, looking so terrible. On
the other, it is a blessing that she is still active and willing to lend
whatever clout she has to good causes.

Time can be cruel enough to all of us. Give the lady a break.
