-Caveat Lector-
Dear Joan Ryan,
Regarding your column entitled "With a hand on the Bible" of Jan
30, 2001,
you wrote:
"The feeling returned during Bush's inauguration when
he again wandered, either carelessly or purposefully,
into the dangerous ground between church and state."
I would like to respectfully mention to you that I feel that there
is no
ground between church and state, and indeed that there has never been
any design or provision made in our history which establishes any
"separation" between church and state.
The only time I ever see this subject brought up is when an
individual
is incensed that another with some religious connection might possible
become involved with or have some influence in government.
I never hear the subject opened when government decides to
interfere
in the affairs of religion.
Those most vocal about the separation act as though a person with
some
religious affiliation is in fact NOT a citizen, or taxpayer, or voter,
and has
no business or right to involve him/herself in the affairs of
government.
The only mention of this subject is found in the first line of the
First
Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise
thereof;
That right limits only the role of government, prohibiting
interference
with religious activities of citizens.
There is nothing limiting the role of the citizen in government,
and
I believe over the years the media has responded to and enhanced the
myth of some kind of legal, enforceable "separation."
Regards, and good luck,
Bill Ball
