"I believe the Federalist is a splendid piece of journalism on the
order of Thomas Paines´ pamphlets. However, the Federalist does itself
no good to deny that the proximate cause of the Civil War was slavery.
I agree that in excoriating the damning institution of slavery, the
warring factions also greatly harmed the theretofore constitutional
balance between Federal power and State power. But, recognizing the
harm to states rights does not in anyway diminish the horror of
slavery. To blame Lincoln for the South´s secession is to blame one of
the few people of the time who so loved all Americans."
Editor's Reply: We knew that advancing a challenging perspective of
Abraham Lincoln's presidency on the event of his birthday would ruffle
some feathers. For the record, The Federalist is not a lapdog for
anyone -- including the "Father of the Republican Party." While the
Civil War -- including its causes and Lincoln's actions -- remains an
important subject of discussion among informed scholars, suffice it to
say that Walter Williams's commentary aptly sums up our studied
opinion of that horrendous and, arguably, avoidable conflagration.
This does not make us racist advocates of that truly heinous
institution -- slavery. Nor does it imply that Mr. Lincoln never had a
good thought. However, our position certainly asserts: "This is not
your father's Lincoln"!

"There were many reasons for the Civil War, some noble, some not, on
both sides. But it is not as simple as just 'states rights', and I say
this as a states rights enthusiast."
Editor's Reply: Indeed, it was not so simple as "slavery" or "states
rights," but the implications of Lincoln's rhetoric and actions on the
Constitution and federalism were clear.

"Thank you for all you provide, but especially for the links
clarifying the effects of Abraham Lincoln's actions and the reasons
for the 'Civil War.' Sad that historical facts are often lost, but
with venues such as The Federalist available, I am confident that the
truth will prevail. Hail, fellow federalists!"
Editor's Reply: Of course, history, as noted by General R.E. Lee, is
written by the victor.

"Wonder how many people died because Reagan was convinced by the
religious right that AIDS was gods (sic) punishment on gays. Bet I
don't see you addressing this in your column."
Editor's Reply: We estimate that number to be precisely equivalent to
the number of homosexuals not taking responsibility for their reckless
sexual proclivities. AIDS is, and remains, entirely preventable.

"You predicted George W. Bush would win Florida´s 25 electoral votes
in 2004. Make that 27 votes! Florida made an electoral gain of two in
the 2000 census."

THE LAST WORD

"Back in 1992, this column set a world indoor journalistic record when
it formally declared the failure of the Bill Clinton administration a
full month before Mr. Clinton actually took office. And so it is high
time that this column took stock of the administration of George 'W.'
Bush III Jr. -- to evaluate his presidency in a fair and balanced
manner, looking not only at Mr. Bush's flaws, but also at his glaring
weaknesses. ...Many of the Bush appointees are experienced Washington
hands who held high-level jobs under George Bush III Sr., Ronald
Reagan, Gerald Ford and Warren G. Harding. Unfortunately, when these
appointees were subjected to FBI background checks, it turned out a
number of them had, at some point in the past few decades, passed
away. This column is not suggesting that a person should be deemed
unqualified to hold high government office merely because that person
has kicked the bucket." --Dave Barry
