Web site helps to find free or low-cost health care

A 55-year-old federal program providing free or affordable medicine and
health care is under-used and under- publicized, according health care
advocates.
"There are currently 687 facilities that provide free or low-cost medical
care, but there is rarely any publicity to let the public know about this
program," said Jim Surasak, a researcher with Financial Assistance Network or
FAN, a nonprofit organization.
In addition, the FAN Web site provides links to dozens of pharmaceutical
firms offering free prescription drugs. Many firms have long-standing free
drug programs.
The Hill-Burton Act, which was passed by the U.S. Congress in 1946, has
provided more than $35 billion in free or low cost care to qualified
participants, according to the FAN Web site. At the time, the government
agreed to subsidize the construction of hospitals and medical care facilities
in exchange for health care providers offering some free care to the poor in
the community.
FAN released a booklet, "Free and Low Cost Medical Care," which assists in
locating participating facilities and drug firms, and in determining
eligibility.
