Can anyone send me information about where to get some help
for true victims of the WOD? I hear politicians stating on
news programs that nobody goes to jail on a first arrest,
etc. This is not true at all. I am in a group of people
trying to help a young woman who was given a 99 year
sentence for her first such arrest. And she did not use
drugs but rather sold a small quantity of left-over
morphine, left from a cancer patient, in the form of oral
pain medication, to an undercover agent.
The laws of this State (Alabama) are so illogical that if
one places a pinch of drugs, say cocaine for this example,
into a gallon of water, they are convicted on the theory of
having a gallon of substance testing positive for cocaine,or
a gallon of cocaine! Apparently the quantity is tested but
there is no qualitative analysis required. Then mandatory
sentencing kicks in.
This woman had no priors of any kind and has two children at
home who need their mother. She is married and has a 12 and
15 years old. I am NOT saying her case is worse than
others, just the one I am working on and I would appreciate
any help or sources for information about how to get her a
new trial.
BTW, the almost empty bottle was almost full when she got to
court! She gets $16 weekly for working in the prison
sweatshop. Who says slavery does not exist in this country?
And that money must be used to buy Tylenol, etc.
And websites or information I receive will be greatly
appreciated. I also think something like 1/3 of a sentence
has to be served before parole is even considered, if at all
on these mandatory sentences. 99 years is a very long time.
33 years is a very long time, too. Please help me if you
can.
