Well June my mother was an English teacher and a farm girl - she bought
an acre of land and had her own little garden and some in trees .....she
would line up excess food as would others along a road near the house
where people would take what they needed. She even grew peanuts
.....but we had rasberries, strawberries, peach and apricot trees, black
cherry trees, and apples....grape arbors - and our own well around which
was built a rose garden.
There were potatoes, tomatos, and it was a garden of Eden. People in
our town all grew food and this one poor street, where they shared one
bathroom in an old house, food would be left there at entrance for
pickup.....yet those same people preferred to go hungry, than grow a
small garden.
My mother gradulated from Heidleberg; she also went to Bowling
Green.......came from old southern families where it was customary to
share food with the poor, but you sure as hell did not sit them down at
your dinner table.
