Gary Condit is moving forward with plans to hold his annual fund-raiser this fall - a sign he intends to run for re-election next year, The Post has learned. Condit, the seven-term California Democrat who had an affair with missing intern Chandra Levy, is expected to start sending out invitations this week to "Condit Country," a massive political fund-raiser set for mid-October, sources said last night. The annual event is held at the Stanislav County Fairgrounds. Supporters pay $35 a head to attend the gathering, which features country-rock bands, as well as Condit and other area politicians serving up barbecue and baked beans. Insiders in the Modesto, Calif., area said the scheduling of the fund-raiser is the first sign that Condit, who has been in seclusion for two weeks with his family, is taking the necessary steps to run for re-election next year. Condit's chief of staff, Mike Lynch, bolstered that conclusion yesterday, saying on CNN, "Early on, before this issue [of Levy's disappearance], the congressman decided he would seek re-election. Those plans have not changed." The latest moves come amid calls by three newspapers in Condit's district for him to step down. "A lot of people think he's crazy, and don't know how in the world he comes back from this," a Modesto-area Democrat told The Post. "But it does look like he's going to try. It looks like he'll try to run against the media." In a statement that was issued by his office Sunday night - and that aides said was personally written by Condit - the 53-year old married congressman blasted the demands that he quit, and said he is planning to publicly address voters "very soon." Condit's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has been in negotiations with major TV networks for several weeks for his client to do a prime-time interview sometime around Labor Day, sources said. Condit's high-profile "rehabilitation" campaign is certain to put him on a collision course with two prominent constituents - Levy's parents, Robert and Susan - who say they remain deeply suspicious of his behavior and who have threatened a lawsuit against him. Dr. Robert Levy told reporters yesterday he's "really not interested" in what happens to Condit politically, because "our focus is on finding Chandra." But the Levys have signaled to Republicans that they are willing to tape attack ads and speak out publicly against Condit if he runs again.
