Study Backs Soy-Based Baby Formula
By Michael Conlon
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Soy-based baby formula does not lead to more sexual
anomalies or general health problems later in life than milk-based formula,
researchers said Tuesday.
``The good news is that, for children that need formula, soy formula is as safe
as cow milk-based formula,'' said Brian Strom of the University of
Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, chief author of the report.
He and colleagues reached the conclusion after looking at 811 adults
between the ages of 20 and 34 who participated in studies at the University
of Iowa from 1965 to 1978. Some of the then infants were fed soy formula,
others milk-based formula.
The study, published in this week's Journal of the American Medical
Association (news - web sites), compared the two groups as adults and
found no significant differences in either men or women based on 30
measurements.
Strom said the biggest concern had been whether phytoestrogens naturally
occurring in soy had a ``feminizing'' effect on children. He said the possibility
was not unfounded since phytoestrogens are analogous to the human female
hormone estrogen and infants fed soy formula get relatively high doses of
them during a time of rapid development.
Phytoestrogens are found in several fruits, vegetables, dried beans, peas
and whole grains, and appear to have a protective affect in the adult diet
against cancer of the prostate, colon, rectum, stomach, breast and lung, the
report said.
The researchers questioned study participants on their puberty and sexual
development to see if they were affected by phytoestrogens. Women were
queried on menstruation, physical development and fertility, men on possible
delayed sexual maturity and fertility problems. They also asked the
participants about other possible impacts, such as hormonal disorders,
cancers, sexual orientation and education.
The soy and milk groups were essentially indistinguishable, the study said.
The study did find that menstrual bleeding in the soy-fed group was, on
average, about one third of a day longer, although not heavier, but said that
and a few other differences were regarded as borderline.
While breast feeding remains the preferred means of nutrition for infants,
many are fed formula. Some cannot tolerate milk-based formula and are
given the soy preparations. About two in 10 U.S. infants are fed soy formula
at some time during the first year of life, the study said.
The study was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (news - web
sites) and by a grant from the International Formula Council, a formula
industry group.
